Chris Wood on Tyneside for his medical after agreeing move to Newcastle United – Report

Chris Wood potentially moving to Newcastle United had been one of the latest transfer window headlines the past 48 hours or so.

Callum Wilson out for at least the next eight weeks and Saturday’s cup defeat to Cambridge underlining the sheer lack of viable alternatives, plenty of chances created to have won the game in the first half and 35 crosses going into the box, yet not a single goal at home to a League One side.

Tuesday evening has seen John Percy of The Telegraph break the story, that Chris Wood is signing for Newcastle, the striker having travelled up to Tyneside tonight for his medical.

That report followed by a host of others confirming the deal, with Newcastle United reported to have triggered a release clause of around £20m in Wood’s contract.

Turning 30 last month, Chris Wood has just under 18 months on his Burnley contract left.

Burnley said to be ‘furious’ about Newcastle United signing their striker and The Mail pointing out that Chris Wood is represented by the same agents as Kieran Trippier.

In all four of his full Premier League seasons, Chris Wood has got double figures in terms of goals:

2017/18 he got 10 goals in 20 PL starts (4 sub appearances)

2018/19 he got 10 goals in 29 PL starts (9 sub appearances)

2019/20 he got 14 goals in 29 PL starts (3 sub appearances)

2020/21 he got 12 goals in 32 PL starts (1 sub appearances)

Overall, that is 46 Premier League goals from 110 starts (17 sub appearances) in those four seasons.

Considering he plays for Burnley who are invariably at the wrong end of the table and don’t create countless chances, relying more on their defensive game to reach safety, I think that is a pretty impressive record.

I see people pointing to only three goals in 17 PL starts this season and that is fair enough but Burnley have been one of the few teams as woeful as Newcastle. One of only two to score less PL goals (16) than NUFC (19), Norwich with only eight.

When you add this season’s stats you still get a very decent 49 goals in 127 PL starts (17 sub appearances) for Chris Wood.

Newcastle United have a truly must win game on Saturday at home to relegation rivals Watford and going into that without a single natural striker would have been a massive worry.

The following Saturday (22 January) sees Newcastle travel to play Leeds, one of Wood’s old clubs. Chris Wood scored a 95th minute equaliser when Leeds drew 1-1 at St James Park in the 2016/17 promotion season.  Then for Burnley, Wood scored the only goal of the game when they won 1-0 in December 2019 against Newcastle.

Hopefully more signings to come.

The very final match of the season sees Newcastle United travel to Burnley…
