Newcastle United have held talks with Benfica regarding the possible transfer of Darwin Nunez, according to Portuguese media.

The report comes from Maisfutebol, who state that Benfica President Rui Costa had a meeting with the current Newcastle United head of recruitment, Steven Nickson.

The report says that the Benfica President told Newcastle United that they wouldn’t be selling Darwin Nunez for anything less than 50m euros (approx £43.7m).

Maisfutebol also claiming that Benfica informed Newcastle that any potential transfer would be next summer (2022) at the earliest and not this upcoming January 2022 window, as they don’t want to weaken their attacking options mid-season.

Benfica are currently third in the league after 13 games, four points behind both Sporting Lisbon and Porto.

On Wednesday, Benfica also qualified from the Champions League group stage, finish second and a point ahead of Barcelona, with Barca losing to Bayern Munich and Benfica winning 2-0 against Dynamo Kiev. Though Darwin Nunez only played the final eight minutes of Wednesday’s game, Benfica having scored twice early on.

In the conversation, the reds warned that they do not intend to sell the Uruguayan striker for less than 50 million euros.

In addition, a negotiation is seen with good eyes only from June 2022, since the idea is not to defraud the attack at the current time.

Maisfutebol report that a number of other clubs have also shown an interest in Darwin Nunez, including Brighton and Fiorentina.

Benfica signed Darwin Nunez for 25m euros (approx £21.9m) from Almeria only 15 months ago, so bids starting from 50m euros would see them at least doubling their money.

Last season, Nunez scored a total of 14 goals in all competitions from 29 starts and 15 sub appearances.

This season, the 22 year old has scored 11 goals from 12 starts (and 5 sub appearances) in the Champions League and domestic league. His goals including two against Barcelona and one against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

An international for Uruguay, Darwin Nunez has made just one start and five sub appearances, scoring once for his country.

Darwin Nunez signed a five year contract with Benfica until June 2025 and he has a selling clause of 150m euros (approx £131m), so Benfica can’t be forced to sell.

However, if indeed Newcastle United were interested in a January offer for this 22 year old striker and if a significant transfer fee was offered. So often, once a substantial offer is made then that can meet with a very different response from any club saying previously there was no way they would be selling at this point. Like the vast majority of other European leagues, the money clubs earn in Portugal from playing in their domestic league is minimal compared to Premier League clubs.
