Newcastle team v Liverpool predicted with four changes for Eddie Howe

Looking at this Newcastle team v Liverpool.

Eddie Howe and his team looking for a surprise result.

Newcastle heading into this one on the back of a 4-0 reverse at Leicester, unable to follow up that first win of the season against Burnley.

The scoreline was harsh, three bits of quality in the second-half seeing Leicester easily slice through the Newcastle defence but in reality, the Foxes scored from four of only five efforts on target.

One thing for sure, with the attacking quality that Liverpool possess, they will take advantage if Newcastle aren’t really at it tonight.

So what should be the Newcastle team v Liverpool to try and pull off the unexpected?

As a starting point…

This was the Newcastle team v Leicester:

Dubravka, Manquillo, Schar, Lascelles, Lewis, Shelvey, Willock, Almiron, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

That was a case of not changing a winning team, the same eleven who had beat Burnley.

Personally, I think zero chance of Eddie Howe going into this game with exactly the same team.

Two main reasons.

The quality of the opposition and the fact that Man City at home swiftly follows on Sunday.

Martin Dubravka ended up as the NUFC fans’ man of the match in our player ratings after Leicester, no chance with any of the goals and commanded his box well. An automatic selection.

I think a change of formation is surely a knocking bet and Eddie Howe sticking in an extra centre-back, probably Sunday against Man City the same.

Federico Fernandez would have likely come in but the NUFC Head Coach said on Wednesday that the Argentine international has a thigh injury, set to miss at least the next two or three matches.

That leaves not the greatest of options on the face of it, Clark or Krafth, unless Hayden drops in, which I don’t think will  be the case.

It could well be a toss of the coin but I think Eddie Howe will go for Krafth, moving Schar to the left of Lascelles in a three centre-back formation. I have seen certain other fans / media suggesting a defence with a back four featuring Clark and Schar as the two central defenders but that won’t be happening! Lascelles hasn’t been great this season but neither have any of the other centre-backs either, he had a decent game against Burnley and showed a bit more leadership than had been the case recently, hopefully creating the situation that allowed Maddison’s outrageous cheating to win the penalty at Leicester, won’t have affected Lascelles’ confidence, as I think we really need him in these games coming up. With Fernandez injured, the NUFC captain has to play.

Moving to a back three / five, I think both Murphy and Ritchie will come in as well. Manquillo was poor on Sunday but I think more a case of using the squad, with the Spaniard likely to come back in for Man City. Similar story on the other side, Lewis not doing too badly against Leicester but Ritchie set to get a game to share the minutes around this week.

In the middle of the pitch, Shelvey ended up far too deep against Leicester and looked more like the player he had been under Steve Bruce. He needs to get more mobile again and get around (up!) the pitch, hopefully he will feel inspired against his old club.

Alongside him, Joe Willock continues to struggle and surely time for a change.

Hayden is a possibility but lacks mobility and ability on the ball, with Eddie Howe having overlooked him so far. Sean Longstaff can get up and down the pitch and I think will get his chance tonight, Howe looking to see him supporting the likes of Callum Wilson.

I like Almiron but I think he will be the one to drop out to accommodate the extra centre-back. Nobody played particularly well against Leicester but I think Eddie Howe will stick with his favoured attacking trio for this game – then change things against Man City.

I can’t see Wilson starting today and Sunday but I think our only reliable goalscorer will play against Liverpool, with then ASM and Joelinton in support.

I think we will see subs used early to share the minutes further, maybe Joe Willock coming on to get a crucial goal, as he did last season in the 1-1 draw here.

We know the score. Whatever Newcastle team v Liverpool that Eddie Howe puts out, the scousers will dominate the game. So what we need is the defence to be really tight and create at least a handful of chances / situations where Newcastle could find a goal.

Good luck to the travelling 3,000 fans!

My Newcastle team v Liverpool:

Dubravka, Murphy, Krafth, Lascelles, Schar, Ritchie, Shelvey, Longstaff, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

So the four changes I think Eddie Howe will make.

Longstaff, Murphy, Ritchie and Krafth, in for Willock, Manquillo, Lewis and Almiron.
