Manchester United fans with very different views ahead of facing Newcastle United
Manchester United fans are looking forward to their next match, the first in 16 days.
Man Utd having applied successfully to the Premier League to have both the away game at Brentford and home to Brighton called off, due to positive Covid cases.
The visitors taking on Newcastle United at St James Park with an 8pm kick-off on Monday night.
Whilst Manchester United fans have been deprived of any football, Newcastle United fans have arguably seen far too much…
Since Man Utd last played, Newcastle have had three Premier League games, all within the space of a week, with three defeats and eleven goals conceded, only one scored.
Fair to say that everything that could go wrong for Eddie Howe in this trio of games, did go wrong. With sheer bad luck, VAR, on the pitch match officials and indeed Howe’s own players, conspiring to produce the worst possible results, which actually looked far worse than the actual performances. Not that the performances were particularly good, just not quite as bad as it looks…
As for Manchester United fans, some very different views, very varied.
A lot of them think this match will be an easy walkover, others though exercising caution, the odd one even severe pessimism.
Bottom line is that Man Utd were on a run of eight Premier League games with only one win and two draws, a massive five defeats.
Then they managed a lucky 3-2 win over Arsenal at the start of December, a penalty needed to get the win. Then late goals at Norwich (another (disputed!) penalty) and home to Palace have produced 1-0 wins.
No denying that Man Utd have some good players who could potentially turn it on But reality is that in recent months is is they who have been getting some hammerings in the Premier League, with Liverpool a 5-0, Watford a 4-1 and Leicester 4-2.
Newcastle United need to raise their game and cut out some of the ridiculous individual errors. However, worth remembering, this Man Utd team are closer (17 points) to the bottom of the Premier League than they are to the top (20 points). The likes of Man City and Liverpool on a totally different level to Man Utd.
Exactly what level Newcastle United end up at this season remains to be seen BUT for me this is a game where NUFC should take something, at least that is if there are going to be realistic hopes of survival this season.
Manchester United fans commenting via their Red Cafe message board:
‘Newcastle are awful, no excuses not to win.’
‘Gotta muzzle the Saint-Maximim dangerman.’
‘We better smash these lot. They gotta go down and the thought of giving them points is horrifying.’
‘We should be winning this easily, but it is Boxing day (well 27th) and you get strange results.’
‘Ah remember the days when we could confidently say we’d beat Newcastle by 4 or 5, you’d expect a win here but nothing guaranteed nowadays.
Hopefully our pressing looks good and we keep it up for most of the match.’
‘For the last few seasons we always get turned over by a prime relegation candidate. Sheffield United last season, Bournemouth before that, Cardiff before that.
It’ll be Newcastle this year.’
‘No excuse to not win. Send these to the championship.’
‘Thank the good Lord we have a game!
Looking forward to this one.’
‘I’d love to see Cavani play and Rashford dropped. Varane if he’s fit too to play with Bailly.’
‘I think the game will go ahead, doesn’t seem like Newcastle have any issues so far, and I think we are past the worst of it now (I hope)!
Varane has to start, not sure Maguire will be dropped, think he will start.
Just not sure who comes in at full backs, does RR stick with Dalot and Telles??’
‘I bet it’s the exact same starting 11 as against Norwich.
United struggled to beat Norwich who are worse than Newcastle and the worse team in the league.. so there’s no reason if United concede the same chances they did to Norwich that Newcastle couldn’t score them and beat United as they have scored 10 goals more than Norwich in the league so know how to score goals.
Night game on the Tele under the floodlights. Manchester United coming to town. Freezing cold temperatures for Manchester United’s inconsistent primadonnas (knowing they’ll never get dropped). The Galloway End will be rocking. Favourites FC (I.e Ole’s starting team and the team that got him the sack is still bizarrely starting under Rangnick). This game has upset written all over it.
Regardless what happens against Newcastle, I’m more excited for the Burnley game at Old Trafford because it’s only a few days later Rangnick will be forced to rotate the team which means we will see players like starting Donny hopefully. And if they impress they should stay in the team.’
‘Let’s see who he picks for Newcastle but I have a sneaky suspicion you’re gonna be right. I’m also looking forward to the changed Burnley team. But that doesn’t mean Ralf is a soft touch. Once he has a chance to properly see everyone together I’m sure he’ll start to change things up. Right now though everyone is on a clean slate in my eyes.’
‘I fully expect Newcastle will find enough positive cases to get it called off, it’s in their interest to push as many games as possible past the start of the January transfer window so their owner’s money can save them.’
‘Rangnick might think the Burnley game will be more difficult. If he does, expect a lot of changes for this Newcastle away
I would say Newcastle away is more difficult than Burnley at home but it depends how Rangnick plays it.’
‘I don’t see this getting cancelled as it’s the only game on that day. Sky won’t want it off, United won’t want it off and nor will Premier League. Newcastle have only three injuries as well so they should have the squad. Fingers crossed.’
‘Feels like ages since the last game. I hope we play well and win without fuss.’
‘Saint Maximillion scares me.’
‘0-4 all over this.’
‘It’s been so long since we’ve played our players should be so up for this game, I’m expecting a 3-0 win for Man Utd.’
‘I worry for this match, it would be so like United to lose this one. Let’s hope Ralf can get them up focused.’
‘We have to beat these lot because they’re cr.p.’
‘United was cr.p against Norwich and was very lucky to win. If United concede the same chances to Newcastle they did to Norwich its game over.
I don’t get this arrogance that we will just turn up and play Newcastle off the park. With Newcastle having Saint-Maximum they always have a chance against any team, if he fancies it and turns up he’s a match-winner.
i think every game United play right now is a battle and United fans need to be realistic regarding expectations and respect every team. When was the last time we thrashed a team 3-4 goals to nill? Months ago.’
‘Saint-Maximum Vs Dalot will be the most important and good battle to watch out for during the game and probably the main battle United need to win in order to win the game. You know Wan-Basaka would have that on lockdown in his back pocket if he started the game (which he would under Ole) but it will be a test of how good Dalot is defensively in this game as I feel what Dalot offers going forward is important to how Rangnick plays with the narrow 4-2-2-2 the fullbacks need to provide the width. So I hope Dalot can have a good game.’
