Leicester 4 Newcastle 0 – Sunday 12 December 2pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

A day when pretty much everything that could go wrong…did.

GToon:

“Turned it off at 3-0 so I missed the last one.

“Total joke of a game as we’ve come to expect this season.

As Bazoox said in his article earlier today, what exactly is VAR for?

“Vile cheating individuals like Maddison should not be allowed to “win” a penalty.

“It’s cheating.

“Having said that, we were up against a team who played a couple of days earlier, who have half a team missing for various reasons, who lost their best defender inside ten mins and we offered nothing.

“Again, we have Manquillo playing people onside for the second goal, not for the first time this season.

“This is what games look like when you get relegated.

“You get a back pass being saved on the line, a non penalty against you and the ref awarding a foul against your player when the opposition players collide with each other.

“Lascelles and Schar really stood out for me today. Both of them were absolutely useless.

“Over to you Eddie.”

Nat Seaton:

“Leicester, who hadn’t kept a clean sheet since the opening day of the season managed to keep us out with ease (other than when they tried to score for us!).

“I travelled down to the match today with what I thought was a realistic amount of hope but it just turned out to be the usual false hope!

“Listening to the Leicester fans singing can we play you every week sums up my day…”

Billy Miller:

“4-0 feels very harsh.

“Leicester converted half of their shots and all but one of the ones on target.

“Although most stats looked favourable for us, the quality of Leicester shone through.

“That and a very dodgy penalty call.”

Brian Standen:

“What planet do I live on?

“I fully expected us to kick on from last week and win, but have to be honest it was poor!

“Was it a penalty?

“Pointless conversation because we are not good enough to mess about from goal kicks!

“Did not start to play until 2-0 down.

“Nothing positive really and next three games look bleak.

“Put to the sword by a weakened Leicester is worrying!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Awful, awful display.

“Jamal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey aren’t good enough to play for this team again.

“Trying to play a high line against that team was always going to end in disaster.

“That was thoroughly wretched and I’m struggling to see a way back for this team.”

Jamie Smith:

“After the boost of Burnley, backed up by some kind results yesterday, reality bit massively as our appalling defending came back with a vengeance.

“Many will point to Maddison’s blatant dive for a penalty that should surely at least have at least merited a referral to VAR.

“However, I’m sure that the pen would have stood, as Lascelles stupidly trailing leg was there to connect with him.

“Scoreline was a bit harsh but once again the grim fixtures ahead serve to make you think we’re bound for the Championship.

“If you think the refs in the Premier are bad…”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“Let down by individual performances.

“Lascelles and Willock not even League 1 standard.

“I hope the board have got their act together come Jan 1st.”

Paul Patterson:

“Lets hope Howe has seen enough of the comedy centre half situation and plays our best two in future, Fernandez and Schar.

“Really don’t understand the Fernandez situation, especially after his classy performance against Norwich.

“This result and performance brings serious questions on the captain as well…”

Dave Punton:

“The nightmare before Xmas.

A complete failure to build on last week’s win.

“Instead we have got worse, a bad against a team damaged by covid who played at Napoli on Thurday.

“There has been no new manager bounce in terms of results and the forthcoming fixture list looks relentlessly difficult.

“We are now nailed on for being in the bottom three at Xmas – a death knell – and they all look so short of Premier League levels.

“A really really bad day for Newcastle United and it’s new owners. A terrible day for Eddie Howe.

“Adding insult to injury was the Maddison dive for the penalty. What’s the point in VAR if it can’t spot that?

“We look doomed.”
