News broke on Tuesday morning that Unai Emery is expected to be announced as the new Newcastle United manager ahead of the weekend.

The media that regularly cover Newcastle United clearly briefed (see below) by ‘somebody’ close to the deal, presumably on the NUFC owners side of things.

With details emerging of talks having taken place at the weekend between the Newcastle United owners and Unai Emery via Zoom.

According to the English / NUFC media, seemingly only the personal terms needing to be agreed and Unai Emery obliged / wanting to take control of his final Villarreal match tonight, as the Spanish side take on Young Boys in a Champions League group game.

Meanwhile, over in Spain today, Spanish media have approached the President and billionaire owner of Villarreal to try and find out what is happening.

Reporters from A Punt Media talking to Fernando Roig.

Roig claimed that: ‘Unai Emery is very happy with Villarreal.’

However, the Villarreal owner admitted that he will be powerless to stop his manager leaving if he chooses to do so.

Unai Emery is coming up to halfway through his contract but has a release clause of 6m euros (approx £5.1m) if another club is willing to pay that amount, plus of course Emery wants to leave.

Fernando Roig making clear that ‘it won’t be Villarreal’s decision’ if Unai Emery does decide to leave before completing his full three year contract.

We will shortly find out just how ‘happy’ Unai Emery is at Villarreal and whether tonight will indeed prove to be his final game with the La Liga club before moving to Newcastle.
