Unai Emery on brink of move to Tyneside – Newcastle United media now back up exclusive
News broke on Tuesday morning that Unai Emery is looking set to become the new Newcastle United manager.
That media exclusive came from David Ornstein of The Athletic who aren’t usual suspects when it comes to click bait.
Ornstein reported that talks had taken place between Unai Emery and Newcastle United, with further talks taking place to agree personal terms (or not, as the case may be).
Matters complicated by Unai Emery having a home Champions League game to take charge of tonight, Villarreal up against Young Boys.
So was this really an ‘exclusive’ from a reputable source, or just mere speculation and guess work.
Waiting to see what the usual Newcastle United media would come out with, hopefully telling us a lot about the validity of the claims from The Athletic.
Sure enough, very quickly numerous journalists who cover NUFC did follow ups.
Rather than just copying Ornstein’s exclusive, the NUFC journalists added a lot of extra information and it became crystal clear that obviously they had all been briefed by a ‘source’ close to the deal., with just The Athletic quicker on the draw presumably.
As for the nature of the ‘source’, the smart money is surely on the new Newcastle United owners. My guess is that with them obviously very aware of the anxiety amongst much of the NUFC fanbase about the time it is taking to bring in the new manager, they wanted to reassure the fans that they are getting close to an appointment AND a more than credible one, if indeed Unai Emery is shortly arriving at St James Park.
Martin Hardy – The Times:
“Unai Emery announcement expected later this week. Will be in charge for Brighton game. Full story to follow…”
George Caulkin – The Athletic:
“Unai Emery and Eddie Howe were both interviewed by members of the Newcastle United board over video call at the back end of the weekend.
“After a thorough process, Emery is the manager they’re going for to replace Steve Bruce.
“Villarreal, Emery’s club, play in the CL tonight.”
Keith Downie – Sky Sports:
“Talks have taken place with Unai Emery and more planned for tomorrow.
“Unai Emery is expected to take charge of Villarreal tonight then move to become Newcastle United manager and be in the dugout for this weekend against Brighton.”
“Unai Emery was on shortlist from start and has emerged as No 1 choice over weekend.
“NUFC expect to appoint Unai Emery before the weekend.”
Luke Edwards – The Telegraph:
“Newcastle United have not agreed wages or make up of coaching staff with Emery yet.
“He has a game this evening with Villarreal in CL.
“Still some work to do.
“Approach was made on Sunday.
“It looks positive, really positive but until it’s done it’s not done.
“Howe would appear to be back up.”
“I’d be really, really happy with Emery. Proven pedigree, point to prove, can organise a defence, will unite the fanbase and provide a rallying point. Will give whole club a lift if he comes.”
