Positive appointment or nobody else wanted the job – Howe about Eddie?

It appears that Eddie Howe is going to be crowned the next king of Tyneside.

Is this really the appointment anybody hoped for (if you are really honest)?

Is Eddie Howe a good appointment, or a desperate last ditch attempt at getting anyone in, because nobody else wants it?

When the Newcastle United takeover happened, we all had a massive range of mixed emotions. After all, last year they had Pochettino lined up and Mbappe as our first signing (sarcasm, for those of you that don’t get it).

Now we are employing a manager that has been out of football for well over a year, that only Celtic, a League One standard team at best, have publicly approached.

Realistically, was he a name even close to the top of the list of managers we wanted?

Would he have been anybody’s first choice, was he a name anyone thought ‘YES!!!! let’s go and get Eddie‘?

On the face of it he is a second choice at best, third or maybe even fourth, or fifth, choice of the new regime. Anyone remember Steve Bruce??????

The thing is, if we want to move on, we have to back Eddie Howe.

He has the potential to be a great manager but that, potential, is all he has.

Howe has no real proven track record of success in the top flight. Some of his signings at Bournemouth were very poor, but because he is willing to take the job under such huge pressure and expectation, he is going to be accepted by our fans.

He is getting support on forums etc but deep down is that how everyone is really thinking?

He did take a club from the bottom leagues and kept them up for a few years. So did fat sham (Bolton), Curbishley (Charlton), but we never ever wanted either of them.

Obviously, no fan wants to admit we have settled for a second choice manager if we are going for greatness. We have to accept he is the best we can hope for at the moment regardless, as he is the only option we have, but will the fans back him like Rafa?

Will they really get behind him with 100% conviction like they did with Rafa Benitez, because if we don’t, it simply won’t work. We need a charismatic figure, a person that can connect with the fans. I’m personally not sure Steady is the answer but as I’ve previously said, we have to back him to the hilt and give him a chance.

I have my own reservations but I really hope I’m wrong and he goes on to be our manger for 15 years and longer at the top of the table.

We have been told by Amanda Staveley and co that we will be challenging for honours in five years and Eddie has been contracted for half of that time (so far…), so he clearly isn’t here just to keep us up as a lot of people think.

Although there is no negativity towards him, the jury is most definitely out on Eddie Howe for the minute, let’s hope his actions are as good as his words to Amanda and Co.
