Newcastle United have extensively scouted three players ahead of January window – Report
An interesting new report on Wednesday has claimed that Newcastle United are actively pursuing three players in the January transfer window.
Since the new Newcastle United owners came in, we (at The Mag) have tended to stay away from the countless transfer tales that appear on a daily basis, indeed what feels like a hourly or even worse basis at times.
However, this particular transfer story on Wednesday did feel like one worth covering, even though it fails to mention Mbappe, Haaland, or Neymar…
The report comes from Martin Hardy who covers Newcastle United for The Times and in the past he has proved to have a decent strike rate when it comes to what is happening at St James Park.
He says that his information is that the new Newcastle United owners and management are targeting Serie A because they see the Italian clubs as ideal for targeting new signings, starting with this January 2022 window.
The man from The Times says that his understanding is that Newcastle United have extensively scouted games involving Inter Milan, AC Milan, Lazio and Juventus since completing the takeover six weeks ago.
The report going on to say that the results of the extensive scouting has produced particular interest in three players.
The Times report naming:
Stefan de Vrij, the 29 year old imposing central defender has started 11 of Inter Milan’s 12 Serie A matches this season, as well as Champions League action for the Italian club this season. The defender having also turned out for Holland in these November internationals as the Dutch booked automatic qualification to the Qatar World Cup finals.
Croatia have also booked their place in Qatar after topping their qualifying group, with 29 year old Marcelo Brozovic a key player as they beat Russia 1-0 to seal their place on Sunday. Brozovic is a defensive central midfielder and he turned 29 yesterday, whilst in club football he is a teammate of Stefan de Vrij at Inter Milan and has started all 12 of their Serie A matches this season.
Making up the trio of claimed NUFC transfer targets named, is Thomas Strakosha. The 26 year old has kept goal for Albania this month and is their number one, keeping a clean sheet in Monday’s win over Andorra but conceding five at Wembley against England on Friday. In club football, Strakosha is with Lazio but is currently on the bench behind veteran keeper Pepe Reina, though the Albanian keeper has been playing regularly in the Europa League for Lazio this season.
If Newcastle United are serious about any / all of this trio then you would think Strakosha would likely be the easiest to land, as he is currently second choice for Lazio. Karl Darlow has struggled this season covering for Martin Dubravka and has been at fault for a number of goals, though Dubravka recently returned to full fitness and has been on the bench in the last couple of matches, so supporters hoping he can quickly return to the first team under Eddie Howe – starting on Saturday against Brentford. Martin Dubravka this past week played his first football of the season for club or country, when keeping a clean sheet as Slovakia beat Malta.
As for the Inter Milan pair, both of them certainly seem to fit the bill in two positions (central defence and central midfield) where Newcastle have been very weak this season. With both of them aged 29 they would obviously be seen as signings for the here and now if United did go for them, both with great pedigree and at the top of their games.
Interesting to see if this claimed interest is followed by anything of substance from Newcastle United when we reach January.
