Sky Sports – Mike Ashley could replace Steve Bruce if Newcastle lose these next 2 games

An interesting update from Sky Sports.

The broadcaster commenting on Steve Bruce’s position as we are into this October international fortnight.

The Newcastle United Head Coach having overseen a disastrous start to the season of no wins in eight games, despite a generous set of fixtures to start 2021/22.

Five defeats and three draws despite Newcastle having faced the likes of Southampton, Watford, Aston Villa, Leeds, Burnley, West Ham and Wolves.

Sky Sports now linking how safe, or not, Steve Bruce’s position is, with Mike Ashley selling the club.

Keith Downie covers Newcastle United for Sky Sports and after a new survey of Newcastle fans by NUST showed 95% want Steve Bruce to go, Downie indicating (see below) that for Ashley it is all about protecting this potential sale of the club.

The Sky Sports man making the point that it will be only as a Premier League club that Mike Ashley could potentially sell Newcastle United and get the level of money he wants.

So his reading of the situation is that whilst Steve Bruce appears to be relatively safe at the moment, if Newcastle United lost their next two matches, the Sky Sports journalist believes that then it is possible Mike Ashley could sack Steve Bruce.

As you can see from the upcoming fixtures below, after the international fortnight Newcastle play Spurs at home in 12 days time, followed six days later with a trip to Crystal Palace. Two matches that in their current form you wouldn’t be surprised to see Steve Bruce’s NUFC team lose.

A week after that sees yet another match that Newcastle will be massively expected to lose, at home to current top of the table Chelsea.

However, following that game is then Brighton away and after that yet another international fortnight, a time where potentially a replacement for Steve Bruce could have some time to find his feet in a new job.

Newcastle United upcoming fixtures:

Sunday 17 October 4.30pm – Spurs home (Sky Sports)

Saturday 23 October 3pm – Crystal Palace away

Saturday 30 October 3pm – Chelsea home

Saturday 6 November 5.30pm – Brighton away (BT Sport)

Saturday 20 November 3pm – Brentford home

Saturday 27 November 12.30pm – Arsenal away (BT Sport)

Keith Downie of Sky Sports – 5 October 2021:

“He [Steve Bruce] knows he is under pressure, he knows that things can change if results carry on the way they are.

“He [Steve Bruce] says that all managers are under pressure in that situation but he says he will not walk away from the fight…

“And the Newcastle United supporters will not be happy about that…95% of them who took part in that [NUST – Newcastle United Supporters Trust] survey want him to walk away, for what they say is the good of the club.

“The bigger issue for Newcastle United right now is the takeover that is going on in the background.

“Mike Ashley desperate for the club to finally be sold after all the years at the helm.

“He’ll only be able to sell that club if they remain in the Premier League.

“So if Steve Bruce is to carry on and have Newcastle down there, marooned in the bottom three, that is when it becomes a situation where he [Mike Ashley] may have to, you know, make a change at the top.

“I don’t think that will happen in the next few days but should they lose against Spurs and then potentially the game [Palace away] after that, I think Mike Ashley may have a decision to make.”
