Paul Merson declares ‘I can’t believe what I’m seeing at the moment’ at Newcastle United
Paul Merson has been talking about the situation at Newcastle United.
The team in the relegation zone and out of the League Cup and without a win all season so far.
Paul Merson choosing to somehow point the finger at the new Newcastle United owners, for the mess they have inherited.
The former Arsenal striker declaring about the new owners at St James Park: ‘It’s all right to come in with all this money but you need to have a plan.’
Well, seen as the Saudi financed bidders had minimal notice that the deal could go through after looking an impossibility for so long, they have inherited a totally toxic situation.
Taking on a club two months into the season and almost three months away from being able to bring in any new signings, after a summer where the previous owner and his head coach presided over an absolute shambles of a transfer window, then with a team already in the relegation zone with not a single win so far…does it get any tougher than that?
Paul Merson declares: ‘I worry for Newcastle United. Nothing’s changed for them. They don’t have a manager, they’re in a relegation battle, and I don’t know what’s going on.’ Well, Newcastle United have a long and dismal record of making snap / wrong decisions in so many areas of the club, especially when it comes to those decisions in terms of who is in charge on and off the pitch during Ashley’s 14+ years, needing / taking some time to get the right people in, doesn’t look such a bad idea. Time will tell of course, whether the right appointments are made, BUT at least we can now assume a professional approach is now being taken.
Paul Merson says ‘nothing’s changed’ for Newcastle United, which when you are talking about three weeks and two games, is a little daft to say the least. Plus, something has changed of course, with the next massive negative after Mike Ashley removed, though predictably that doesn’t find favour with Paul Merson either…’They’ve sacked Steve Bruce and they’re going into tough Premier League games without a manager.’
Ironically, it was the media and other outsiders who successfully pressurised the new Newcastle United owners into allowing Steve Bruce a ‘sentimental’ 1,000 game in management. They were rewarded with embarrassing behaviour by Steve Bruce, especially in his pre-match Spurs press conference where he said he hoped journalists had been given ‘a slap’ by their bosses. Then an absolutely clueless approach to a home game with Tottenham, where Newcastle could and should have lost by five or six and didn’t have a shot on target after Callum Wilson’s second minute goal.
It wasn’t pretty last Saturday but Newcastle battled to a point at Palace under Graeme Jones, I think if Bruce had been kicked out before registering yet another defeat (no wins in nine games to start the season, only seven wins in his final 38 NUFC matches), then I reckon every chance Newcastle could have got a point or better, against a Tottenham team that aren’t that good. Just look at what the Spurs fans are saying about their side and manager at the moment! I just hope we don’t look back at that Spurs game as a wasted great opportunity to get points on the board.
Steve Bruce burnt through a generous opening set of fixtures that should have yielded far more points. The new owners and those they appoint, now having the job of recovery and at the same time a tough fixture schedule to face.
Newcastle United were facing disaster with Mike Ashley and / or Steve Bruce, now they are both gone, we can finally start and rebuild.
Paul Merson predicts a very easy 3-0 Chelsea win for sure on Saturday, hopefully a unified team, crowd, management and owners can prove that not to be the case.
No guarantees that will be the case BUT far more chance now that changes have been made, with so many more set to come.
Paul Merson speaking to sportskeeda:
“I worry for Newcastle United.
“Nothing’s changed for them.
“They don’t have a manager, they’re in a relegation battle, and I don’t know what’s going on.
“They got absolutely ripped by Crystal Palace last week and they were lucky that Benteke didn’t have his shooting boots on.
“It’s all right to come in with all this money but you need to have a plan.
“They’ve sacked Steve Bruce and they’re going into tough Premier League games without a manager.
“I can’t believe what I’m seeing at the moment.
“Chelsea have rested most of their players this week. They made loads of changes in the Carabao Cup and I don’t think they can be stopped this weekend.
“Newcastle United are an absolute disaster at the moment and I don’t see anything but a Chelsea win here.
“Prediction: Chelsea 3-0 Newcastle United.”
