Newcastle City Council have responded after the end of Mike Ashley’s 14 years reign.

In an official statement (see below), the leader of Newcastle City Council declared today to be a ‘momentous day in the history of the club and our city.’

Welcoming the new NUFC owners, Councillor Nick Forbes said: ‘I know that fans will be delighted by this news and are excited to welcome a decisive new direction for the club.’

Newcastle United is potentially capable of great things when everybody pulls together but Mike Ashley had zero interest in an inclusive approach.

Ran for only his own selfish purposes, Ashley had no interest in working with the NUFC fanbase, Newcastle City Council, or indeed anybody else, for the collective good of the football club and city.

This is an exciting new era for both club and city, who knows what can now be achieved if we all push in the same direction…

Newcastle City Council Official Statement – Thursday 7 October 2021:

‘Council leader reacts to NUFC takeover

Newcastle United Football Club have announced that a deal has been agreed for the sale of the club.

Following the announcement, Cllr Nick Forbes, Leader of Newcastle City Council, said:

“This is a momentous day in the history of the club and our city. I know that fans will be delighted by this news and are excited to welcome a decisive new direction for the club.

“Football is such a vital part of Newcastle’s identity and St James Park is, for many, the literal and metaphorical beating heart of the city. The prospect of successes on the pitch once more gives us all something to hope for.

“Newcastle United is our city’s biggest nationally and internationally recognised brand. As such, I look forward to speaking to the new owners to see what further opportunities for our city today’s announcement will bring.”
