Newcastle 0 Chelsea 3 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s dismal defeat

Newcastle 0 Chelsea – Saturday 30 October 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle were woeful, the ultra negative tactics could be claimed by some to have ‘worked’ for 64 minutes but only because Chelsea failed to punish NUFC…until scoring on 65 minutes and then just a case of how many.

Ben Cooper:

“An insipid United performance was comprehensively punished by a Chelsea team missing their first choice attack.

“It was 0-0 at half time but it many ways the first half was more depressing as NUFC didn’t bother trying to attack.

“The second half saw the Blues wake up, push further forward and score at will.

“Much for Graeme Jones to consider before next week’s game at Brighton.

“Like how to attack, or at least try and think about attacking.

“How to pass the ball, or at least try and think about passing the ball.

“And for those players who simply couldn’t be bothered to try today, whether they should get the chance to put it right next week.

“This was utter garbage.

“An absolute shambles.”

Billy Miller:

“It was always going to be a tough one against the league leaders and European Champions.

“Still though, it was an unbearable watch.

“We showed such little ambition.

“If Jones is still here for the Brighton game he needs to have a real think about shape and personnel.”

Jamie Smith:

“While you have to remember we were playing the league leaders/European champions, this still hammered home how desperate things are getting.

“The legacy of the Bruce era (which the media friendlies will never acknowledge) is increasingly likely to require a fightback from the Championship and turn a 5 year plan to challenge for the Premier League, into a 10 year effort.

“Apparently the only effort on target was from the admirable Manquillo with 10 to go.

“Otherwise, we lacked any impetus or inclination to push for a goal and this lot requires extensive surgery, not a decent coach mixing things up slightly.

“We have a short run of potentially winnable games before an horrendous Christmas.

“If the owners want to avoid the boardrooms at Barnsley and Millwall in the near future, they need to react fast.”

Dave Punton:

“Forget the manager hunt, park the takeover for a bit, this Newcastle United are a mess.

“European champions Chelsea have taken us to bits in the second half today.

“A game where the home side enjoyed just 21% possession. Woeful.

“Back to the drawing board for Graeme Jones.

“And for what it’s worth, I think he should have made some changes today.

“This is a group of players who have performed miracles in recent years to stay up.

“This time it’s even tougher.

“The search for a win goes on.

“Steve Bruce is gone – good – but the oh so familiar failings remain.

“It’s a relegation battle.”

Brian Standen:

“Positives, the owners must know where the bar is set.

“Once the inevitable happened, no coming back.

“Can we be in touch of safety in January? Doubtful?

“Masterclass by Chelsea – simple as.”

“I happened to watch the second half and it was embarrassing in the extreme.

“It was like when the “dads” play against their 5 yr olds and don’t let them have the ball.

“I’ve never seen such a gulf between two groups of people who are supposed to be able to do the same thing.

“I also think if anyone was under any illusions about Jones being an option then this game needs to have ended that.

“At 60 odd minutes he has Willock and Miggy waiting to come on.

“The ball goes out and Chelsea make two changes while he has our two changes still stood waiting.

“Chelsea then push forward and James is left with ages to line up a shot because Fraser who was coming off didn’t bother closing his player down.

“The second goal was the same. Far too slow to the second ball.

“I turned off after that as it was pretty unbearable to watch.

“Roll on January and a totally new team……

“But before that there can be no place for Darlow, Richie and Fraser in the next game.

“Absolute rubbish the three of them.”

Paul Patterson:

“We can’t let this slide for another game longer.

“Appointing ANYONE with some competence above what we have in the coaching department will do…”

Nat Seaton:

“Well well well… when I saw the team I thought we were set up to play defensively but I never expected it to be as bad as it turned out.

“I cannot believe the tactics Jones sent us out to play.

“This has to be one of the most disappointing games at home in a long time given the circumstances.

“Here’s hoping for changes this week before we take on Brighton and hopefully get some sort of new manager injection of change in direction…”
