Jose Mourinho asked about Newcastle United vacancy and rumours

Jose Mourinho has been quizzed about the manager’s job at Newcastle United.

Sky Italia asking the former Chelsea and Man Utd boss about a potential return to the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho having been sacked in April (2021) by Tottenham, before then joining Roma the following month.

Jose Mourinho asked by Sky Italia about rumours linking him with the Newcastle United job – 20 October 2021:

“Newcastle job?

“I have decided to stay [at Roma], I’m not leaving.

“I have signed for a three year project with Roma and I’m not going to leave my players.”

Sky Sports in the UK when reproducing these quotes from Sky Italia, have referenced how in the past Jose Mourinho has been linked with the Newcastle job and also his affection for NUFC, inspired by Sir Bobby Robson (many Newcastle fans wondering what could have been achieved if Sir Bobby had been encouraged/allowed to bring in his eventual successor at St James Park and if that person had been his friend and former colleague back in the mid 2000s…).

As you can see in the quotes below before Jose Mourinho saw his side beaten 1-0 (Dubravka’s NUFC debut) by Rafa Benitez’ Newcastle United back in 2018, Mourinho often happy to talk positively about our club.

However, when you see these latest quotes above, he does appear to be hinting as though there has potentially been contact with the new Newcastle United owners BUT then he would say / do that! Like so many other managers, it is a free hit to win more favour with your current club / fans when making out you are preferring them over another possible job, even if you haven’t in reality been approached…

Roma are currently fourth in Serie A (seven points off top but only one point above seventh), with ironically Jose Mourinho having taken over at Roma from Paulo Fonseca, the current bookies favourite for the Newcastle job, who finished seventh last season with the Italian club.

Jose Mourinho ahead of playing Newcastle United and asked about (at that time) never having won a Premier League match at St James Park – 9 February 2018:

“It’s true. I think it’s the only stadium in the PL. Also Huddersfield but only (managed a team in a game there) once.

“I think it’s difficult, honestly, I’ve always felt beautiful matches but difficult. I like to go there and like the feeling of going to Mr Robson’s home.

“I like St James Park, I think it’s really nice and the atmosphere.

“The fans are good and enthusiastic. I like the Geordies.

“I lost and drew a few times (at Newcastle in the Premier League).

“I hope the result is different but I know the characteristics of the game are not going to be different.

“Newcastle are a good team, they have had a very good (January) transfer window with Kenedy and Slimani – two players I know well and who can improve their team.

“Benitez knows how to get points.”
