Graeme Jones speaks after gutsy committed performance “Thought we deserved that”

Graeme Jones watched on as his first Newcastle United team selection gave it everything.

Only 25% possession at Selhurst Park but 100% commitment from his players.

A first game in charge which could even be his last as well, depending on how things go on the new manager front.

Even if Graeme Jones isn’t still leading from the front next Saturday against Chelsea, he has produced a valuable point against a Palace team who are much improved, especially going forward.

I’m not going to namecheck you know who…but what a pleasure it was to hear a Newcastle United manager / head coach speaking honestly after a match, what he was saying matching what you just watched.

Graeme Jones declaring: ‘I think our organisation, our understanding…and mentality. I thought we deserved to get something from the game. It’s far from where I want to be, on the ball in particular.’

That summing it up perfectly. It was a tough watch at times and no doubt Palace will think they should have won on possession and chances created…but equally, the spirit of Jones and his players arguably meant it was a deserved first point after the departure of…you know who.

Graeme Jones speaking to Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park:

Interviewer:

“Big smile on your face but all sorts of emotions this afternoon I imagine, given the way that game swayed one way and then the other?”

Graeme Jones:

“Yes.

“Pleased to get something out of it.

“Thought we deserved that.

“I think our organisation, our understanding…and mentality. I thought we deserved to get something from the game.

“It’s far from where I want to be, on the ball in particular.

“I thought on the turnover and the first pass could have been better at times – but it was a solid place to start from. We are looking to build and improve for as long as I’m doing it.

Interviewer:

“Were you pleased that everybody was able to knuckle down for you right from the very start, the game plan clearly worked for you, until Christian Benteke popped up and put Palace in front?”

Graeme Jones:

“Yes, and it came from our free-kick, so you are in control of that moment, we didn’t really have any direction from it, which you can’t control everything in football. We had numerous opportunities to clear it, which is disappointing.

“It’s the only mistake we have made in the game.

“I think Christian [Benteke] had a header in the first half [that hit the post] but that’s Christian’s profile, that is why he has been a Premier League and international footballer, because he pulls on the back shoulder and he’s a real threat. He is a real handful you know.

“So, overall I’m really pleased.

“It was a solid performance, particularly off the ball.

“On the ball, I’d like to do better moving forward, but that won’t come overnight.”
