Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.

The former top referee has now given his call on the Newcastle v Crystal Palace match.

Dermot Gallagher looking at a key incident, in a game in which Newcastle looked to have picked up a point through Callum Wilson’s brilliant overhead goal, before then after Palace ‘scoring’ in the closing stages…only for VAR to intervene.

Dermot Gallagher speaking on Ref Watch on Sky Sports:

Incident:

“Christian Benteke heads Crystal Palace back into the lead with a towering 87th-minute header but VAR intervenes, bringing Marc Guehi’s shirt pull on Ciaran Clark to referee Darren England’s attention, and the goal is disallowed.”

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“This is an amazing spot by Lee Mason, who was the VAR.

“When this was disallowed, I wondered why, but when you see the replay you can see how good a decision it is.

“Guehi clearly grabs Clark’s shirt.

“Considering how crowded the penalty area was, it was amazing how it was spotted so quickly.

“Immediately the VAR intervened and said it was a foul, which it was.”

So Dermot Gallagher clearly not critical of Darren England, the referee on the pitch, for giving the goal initially. Benteke scoring in a crowded penalty area.

However, the former top referee full of praise for Lee Mason far away watching on a screen, as the man responsible for VAR on the day.

Thankfully Mason asking the referee to have a look at the pitchside monitor and rightfully crossing off the goal and ensuring Newcastle got their point.

Even though replays from certain angles showed that clearly there was a punishable foul, the fact is that in the time VAR has to act, Mason could have missed it.

It could prove a valuable point as stage one for the new NUFC owners is the job of getting out of relegation trouble.
