Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle 1 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s draw

Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle 1 – Saturday 23 October 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Benteke could and should have had a hat-trick but a battling Newcastle arguably deserved their point for the commitment shown, a point which came courtesy of a superb Callum Wilson overhead kick.

Ben Cooper:

“The good news is that United took a point away from South London after a beautiful Callum Wilson overhead kick just past the hour had cancelled out a Benteke header quarter of an hour earlier.

“United also posted a more disciplined defensive display against a more positive Crystal Palace side but that is really where the positives end.

“Apart from that, NUFC were atrocious in limited possession of the ball and equally fortunate that a stupid bit of shirt-pulling cost the Eagles a winner late on.

“Reverting to last season’s successful 5-3-2, the players looked defensively more comfortable, but with the team unable to complete a pass there wasn’t a lot to cheer about except the point.

“Lucky Graeme Jones?

“Thankfully.

“As for Callum Wilson, if he had been playing for Palace they would have won 5-1.”

Billy Miller:

“The old head coach is gone but today was much of a muchness.

“We’ll definitely take a point.

“We’re going to have to be patient as this team is a right mess.

“Their bodies are going to have to get used to training more than twice a week for a start.

“We need the permanent appointment as soon as possible but, again, I’d rather be patient and get the right man.”

Dave Punton:

“A point on the road. It’s a start.

“The takeover of the club is no magic wand and this is going to be a long hard fight to get clear of the bottom three.

“But today, post Steve Bruce, we have seen something of a reaction and that man Callum Wilson made it honours even.

Not quite green shoots of recovery, but it’s a start.”

Brian Standen:

“Battling point with plenty good qualities.

“However, the alarming one paced midfield we started with is a worry.

“Great equaliser and while the scoreline flattered us, it is welcome.”

GToon:

“Delighted with the point as I didn’t think we’d get one having watched Palace at Arsenal on Monday.

“I was surprised with our team tbh but maybe those are the players who worked the hardest in the week to earn their place.

“We got something today and it’s about not letting the gap get too big before January.”

Paul Patterson:

“Never knock an away point.

“Added to the Norwich result, this was an excellent outcome.”

Nat Seaton:

“Well we definitely pinched a point there, but what a way to pinch it, brilliant goal from Wilson.

“All the same problems are still evident.

“So I feel really pleased to be leaving Selhurst Park with a point.

“Who would have thought that 9 games in we would still be looking for our first win, have only 4 points and yet have smiles on our faces?!?!”
