Paul Merson warns Manchester United fans they should be worried if Ronaldo can’t score against Newcastle

Paul Merson has been looking ahead to Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford.

Manchester United v Newcastle United at 3pm.

In particular, Ronaldo set to make his second Man Utd debut.

Paul Merson warning Manchester United fans that Ronaldo isn’t the same player who they used to watch, that instead of being able to do it all, the Portuguese player will now be looking to get service from the other Man Utd players in order to score goals on a regular basis.

Paul Merson even declaring: ‘…if Ronaldo doesn’t score today then I would be worried if I was a Man Utd fan. I think this is a prime game, I think this is the game. If I could pick a game this is one of them, Newcastle at home. You are going to have five thousand Newcastle fans there, who are hoping he [Ronaldo] gets four!’

When at Man Utd previously, Newcastle United were the only Premier League club he scored a hat-trick against, whereas in La Liga he scored an amazing 34 hat-tricks for Real Madrid.

Paul Merson making a big distinction between the Premier League and the rest: ‘This is the hardest league in the world. They play Newcastle today and if Maximius [Allan Saint-Maximin] gets going, it could be a problem. It’s a hard game, Newcastle are not turning up and looking at the fixtures and going, lets write this game off and we’ll play in the next one. That’s what they do in other countries, they go oh we can’t beat these, so we’ll go and play whoever in the next one.’

Exactly how difficult Steve Bruce and the Newcastle players make it, remains to be seen. The Newcastle fans just hoping that Bruce doesn’t go with his default of all out defence and gifts total domination and certain victory to Man Utd.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“Ronaldo is just not going to be the player that beats the players.

“You watch him when he was at Manchester United before, he was extraordinary.

“The stuff he was doing, the foot overs, I mean, my telly fell off the stand once. It just went, the cameraman man went, the lot.

“He was that good.

“He will score you goals if you put the ball in the box.

“My problem is Rashford, Greenwood or Sanchez [Sancho…] are not playing when they are all fit, they are three very talented footballers, they are the future of Manchester United. I know they are going to learn off this man but at the same time, Ronaldo needs crosses, in my opinion. We see that against the Republic of Ireland, put the ball in the net, the man is a finisher.

“They [Man Utd) play with two wingers who don’t cross the ball, they play with Sanchez [Sancho] who wants to cut inside and have a shot and play one-twos. They play with Greenwood on the other side who really wants to come inside, or even go on the outside and have shots.

“In my opinion, if you went Ronaldo and Messi, I’d go Ronaldo because he’s done it everywhere he has been. He’s ripped it up, he’s just not the same player. Still a great player, still better than other players.

“But if he wins the Premier League at Manchester United, this will be the biggest thing he has ever done in my opinion, in the Premier League, in his career.

“This is the hardest league in the world.

“They play Newcastle today and if Maximius [Allan Saint-Maximin] gets going, it could be a problem.

“It’s a hard game, Newcastle are not turning up and looking at the fixtures and going, lets write this game off and we’ll play in the next one. That’s what they do in other countries, they go oh we can’t beat these, so we’ll go and play whoever in the next one.

“That’s why this, this product, is all around the world. Everybody loves it, every game is a game.

“I can’t wait to watch him today.

“My mate is going up to the game, I said to him, he [Ronaldo] needs to score today, if Ronaldo doesn’t score today then I would be worried if I was a Man Utd fan.

“I think this is a prime game, I think this is the game.

“If I could pick a game this is one of them, Newcastle at home.

“You are going to have five thousand Newcastle fans there, who are hoping he [Ronaldo] gets four!”
