Official training update – 3 Newcastle United players return but 6 notable by absence
Today (Wednesday 15 September) has seen the club release a training update of the Newcastle United players.
The images released, showing Newcastle United players training ahead of Friday night’s hosting of Leeds United at St James Park.
Today’s photos showing 22 Newcastle United players training as they hope to bounce back from a dreadful start to the season, with four defeats and the fortunate draw against Southampton in the opening five matches.
Amongst the text that went with Wednesday’s photo gallery, the Newcastle United update included:
‘Joe Willock and Ciaran Clark have trained ahead of Friday night’s visit of Leeds United, with both appearing to have overcome the knocks they picked up at Manchester United at the weekend.
Steve Bruce revealed after the match that the pair had been forced off due to injury at Old Trafford, along with goalscorer Javier Manquillo, so the United head coach will have been pleased to see them take part in Wednesday morning’s session at the Magpies’ Benton HQ.
In another boost to Bruce, Ryan Fraser was also involved after he returned early from international duty with Scotland earlier in the month with an injury, while Allan Saint-Maximin was all smiles before training – and was beaming even more after a couple of stunning goals during the session.
Youngsters Elliot Anderson and Joe White also featured in club photographer Serena Taylor’s latest photo gallery for nufc.co.uk.’
The photos published by Newcastle United this Wednesday afternoon have featured the following 22 players from what we could see:
Miguel Almiron, Elliot Anderson, Ciaran Clark, Karl Darlow, Federico Fernandez, Ryan Fraser, Dwight Gayle, Mark Gillespie, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick, Joelinton, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Dan Langley, Jamal Lewis, Jacob Murphy, Matt Ritchie, Allan Saint-Maximin, Fabian Schar, Joe White, Joe Willock, Freddie Woodman
That list of 22 though does include four goalkeepers (Darlow, Woodman, Langley, Gillespie) and the two ‘youngsters’ Anderson and White. Leaving 16 senior outfield players in total, that can be seen in the official images.
When it comes to those missing from Wednesday’s training images we came up with six who didn’t appear in any of the images.
Callum Wilson heading up those who are missing, along with Jonjo Shelvey and Martin Dubravka. Last week Steve Bruce said he didn’t have a return date for any of that trio.
Arguably Newcastle’s best player on Saturday, it looks like Javier Manquillo won’t be involved against Leeds. Whilst Paul Dummett is yet again missing from the training photos, once more set to be unavailable.
One surprise who is missing is Sean Longstaff. Unless the camera missed him completely by accident, it looks like the midfielder could be a doubt for Leeds as well.
Good news that Willock, Fraser and Clark have now all returned to training and hopefully they will be available to start against Leeds if selected.
However, if indeed there are at least those six other Newcastle United players all ruled out, some for the foreseeable, it does leave the NUFC squad not looking particularly strong.
