Mistaken for a Juventus fan, Newcastle supporter assaulted – Wrong place, wrong time
A Newcastle United supporter on holiday in Italy, has had the unfortunate experience of being assaulted when mistaken for a Juventus fan.
Newcastle supporter Andrew was visiting La Spezia, a city and seaside resort on the west coast of Italy, roughly halfway between Genoa and Pisa.
Coming to the end of his four day stay, on Wednesday (yesterday) one of the people he was staying with gave Andrew a lift to the pharmacy to buy a covid testing kit in advance of his return to England.
Looking for a parking space, a pedestrian waved the car down and the driver slowed, as he assumed it was a helpful passer-by set to point out where there was a parking space. Instead, as the car came to a stop, a second man stepped forward and punch the Newcastle fan in the throat through the car’s open window.
Local newspaper Citta Della Spezia reports that they immediately drove off to get away from the scene of the assault.
When they eventually came to a stop for the second time on finding a parking space, the occupants of the car once again found themselves surrounded by locals.
By this point though the occupants of the car had realised why the assault had taken place and now this additional interest. A very bad case of wrong place, wrong time, as late yesterday afternoon minnows Spezia were due to be hosting Juve…Newcastle supporter Andrew had been mistaken for a Juventus fan (the Italian club of course also sporting black and white stripes on their shirts).
Once Andrew has pointed out the Newcastle United crest on his shirt, those who had surrounded the car for a second time were satisfied and there was no further trouble.
Citta Della Spezia report that Andrew’s friend, the driver, called the police and they arrived to take down details of the assault and descriptions of those involved in the attack.
