Gary Caldwell sends message to Newcastle United fans after leaving for second time

Back in 1997, along with older brother Steven, Gary Caldwell arrived at Newcastle United to join the academy set-up.

On the NUFC books for the next seven years, Gary Caldwell eventually moved on permanently after a number of loan spells at other clubs.

The younger Caldwell not making a single Newcastle United first team appearances, unlike Steven Caldwell who managed 28 NUFC appearances and one goal.

Gary Caldwell going on though to have a very decent career at the likes of Wigan, Hibs and Celtic, as well as picking up 55 caps for Scotland. Also then going into management later with Wigan, Chesterfield and Partick Thistle.

On 16 August 2021, Newcastle United announced a surprise return, after leaving back in 2004, 17 years later Gary Caldwell coming in as ‘interim Under 23s lead coach.’ Last night (Monday) bringing news from the club (see below) that after three weeks his interim spell was over.

Now Gary Caldwell has sent a message to Newcastle United and all NUFC fans.

“Enjoyed immensely being back on the grass coaching at the club that gave me my start in football.

“Thank you to all the players and staff for making me feel so welcome…

“Wish you and all the Newcastle fans the best of luck for the rest of the season.

“A fantastic football club.

“Looking forward now to my next challenge in the game which I will announce in the next few weeks.”

Newcastle United official announcement:

‘Former Magpies defender Gary Caldwell has left the club’s Academy after completing his scheduled period as interim Under-23s lead coach.

Caldwell stepped in on a short-term basis last month following the departure of Chris Hogg, and leaves with the recruitment process to appoint Hogg’s full-time successor nearing completion.

Current assistant Kevin Richardson will take the team for its upcoming fixtures ahead of a permanent appointment being announced shortly.

The club would like to thank Gary for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.’
