Wilson, ASM and Almiron amongst 8 who miss secret Newcastle friendly defeat – Not looking good
The final score ended Burnley 1 Newcastle 0.
A secret behind closed doors friendly organised at Turf Moor.
Presumably with the prime aim of trying to give players who haven’t had many minutes in pre-season friendlies, time on the pitch.
In the event, only one Newcastle United player returned to get some valuable minutes, Jonjo Shelvey making his comeback from a calf injury and getting 30 minutes.
Still missing from the action were Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow, Paul Dummett, Elliot Anderson, Miguel Almiron, Javier Manquillo, Allan-Saint Maximin and Callum Wilson.
Steve Bruce has claimed that the likes of Almiron, ASM and Wilson could all line up against West Ham in 12 days time but surely this is the head coach’s fantasy island patter yet again, as I would be amazed if any of the three will be in a position to be able to start that opening Premier League match.
Having lost to sixth tier York City and then played League One opposition in their other three friendlies, Newcastle United found it tough to create chances against Premier League opposition. Joelinton coming the closest to scoring when his header (from a Murphy cross) was denied by the woodwork.
The serious lack of goals and creativity in the team is all too obvious when ASM and Wilson (and Willock…) aren’t involved, Burnley running out comfortable winners after Jay Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game on 70 minutes.
It is more Premier League opposition on Saturday against newly promoted Norwich and against another relegation rival, very interesting to see whether many (if any) players are in a position to return to action and of course whether whoever is on the pitch can give any confidence for the season ahead.
