West Ham fans comments reacting to eventual domination and 4 goal Newcastle demolition job
West Ham fans able to travel to their first Premier League away match in a year and a half.
However, the Hammers had only won twice in their last seventeen visits to St James Park…
So after having an effort cleared off the line in the opening seconds, West Ham fans must have then feared the worst when ASM and Wilson combined to give Newcastle United the lead on five minutes.
By the end of the 90 minutes though, there was only one clear and deserved winner, and it wasn’t NUFC.
West Ham fans watching their team dominate the second half and score three goals, turning around a 2-1 deficit at the break, after a pretty even opening half.
Looking back on an entertaining (for them anyway) opening match, West Ham fans are left once again dreaming of repeating last season’s exploits, or even better…
If they had won one of their two matches last season against NUFC, the Hammers would have been playing Champions League and not Europa League football this season.
No surprise that so many of the West Ham fans mention Wilson and Saint-Maximin, without either of them you have to really worry about how Newcastle’s season will turn out.
As for the Hammers supporters, their biggest concern was the perceived disrespect they got from Match of The Day. If only Newcastle United’s problems were on that level.
West Ham fans commenting via their Knees Up Mother Brown message board:
‘We should have had 7 ( seven) goals. Steve Bruce is deluded if he thinks it all hinged on the penalty.’
‘What really impressed me about this West Ham, was watching us move up through the gears yesterday, we simply were too good for Newcastle, especially once Rice took matters into his own hands.’
‘BBC an absolute disgrace they lead with a load of rubbish about Kane. Then straight into Spuds v city despite our 6 goal thriller with the Toon.’
‘Really enjoyed that match. Particularly enjoyed seeing Shearer whinging about the penalty call he wouldnt move on from it.’
‘They didn’t show our first minute effort that was cleared off the goal line!’
‘Watching Bowendinho run through Newcastle really was special, if he could really finish he would be perfect.’
‘The CEO of my company is a Newcastle fan and he sends out a an email every Friday telling us how everything is going and to wish us all a nice weekend. Friday just gone he ended his email by saying “I hope you all have a lovely weekend except for West Ham fans, I really hope you have a horrible one”.
That win is for you.’
‘The coverage of our game on MOTD2 is hilarious, they’re genuinely gutted we won
The commentator on Newcastle’s goals is elated, then his pitch of voice when we scored sounded disappointed
Then Williams post match saying it’s a shame we were given the pen
Makes it even sweeter thanks beeb.’
‘And far more post match analysis on Newcastle than us.
We did win, didn’t we?.’
‘We were very very good in the second half.
I did think at one point we’d lose but the team seemed to nullify Maxim and once he’d shot his bolt it was game over.
Should have had a couple more, header saved off the line and Bowen should have tucked his effort away.
Very entertaining game of footy that was.’
‘The thing I liked most was the rotation of our attackers. Bowen, Antonio and Benrahma constantly interchanged and completely bemused the Newcastle defence in the 2nd half. Those three combined superbly for Antonio’s goal, Bowen with a clever lob out of defence for Benny, who timed his carry and pass for the onrushing antonio perfectly. Antonio made no mistake. Top marks all round.
A nod to Declan who squashed the newcastle midfield in the 2nd half.’
‘Just watching the highlights back, absolutely loving the Newcastle fans celebrating like they’ve scored when the pen is missed, only for it to all change a second later. Just brilliant.’
‘Saint-Maximin will cause everyone problems and so I wouldn’t be too concerned by how sharp they looked when he was driving forward. That said, Dawson needs to brush up ASAP – he was completely asleep for their second goal, a shocking piece of defending.’
‘Wilson and St Maximan are both dangerous players and we won’t be the only team where they terrorise defenders this season. Dawson had a tough time for sure. Only the first game but he looked a bit off the pace at times.
But not a day to be negative with so many positives. Antonio, Benrahma, Fornals, Bowen, all superb today and always looking threatening.’
‘Thought we done ok 1st half even though Rice and Antonio were pretty much anonymous. Take away their main threat Saint Maximin and Newcastle really are a very average team. So it was really annoying to go in a goal behind at half time.
As others have noted, Rice was more of himself 2nd half and hence one of the reasons we looked the better team.’
‘Great result and I really hope the fans that traveled all that way enjoyed themselves. The atmosphere was incredible.’
‘Haha, have that Shearer and Les Ferdinand, with your big first-half goal celebrations!’
‘West Ham scored 4,came from behind, away from home, in the first game in front of fans for 18 months.
Sky : that penalty was a bit soft.’
‘Sticking one up ‘wor Brucie.
