Steve Bruce reveals the players that Newcastle United are looking for in this transfer window

Only a week until the Premier League kicks off and three weeks before the transfer window shuts, Steve Bruce in a new interview talking about the transfer market.

Sky Sports releasing a clip from an interview with the Newcastle United Head Coach before the final friendly of pre-season.

Steve Bruce declaring: ‘I am very quietly confident that we will bring in a couple of players before the window closes. That is for sure.’

So Brucey is ‘very quietly confident…for sure’ that at least two new players will arrive before the window closes in 24 days time. Watching his interview / reading his words, I’m not entirely sure what he means…is Steve Bruce ‘sure’ Newcastle will get a minimum of two new signings, or is he ‘sure’ that he is ‘very quietly confident’???

Maybe a better idea as we now hit day 60 of the transfer market, would be if Newcastle United just went and made bids for players and signed them. A bit of a revolutionary idea but one that the other 19 Premier League clubs think is a better option than simply doing nothing and hoping to pick up scraps at the last minute.

So what players exactly are Newcastle United targeting?

Steve Bruce declaring: ‘What I did say to the supporters, to tell them, look, from the offset…We are in a market where we are looking for players with very little transfer fee, or obviously the loan market.’

So there we have it, Newcastle United only looking at loan players and / or cheap as chips ‘bargain basement’, even though NUFC have a team / squad that is desperate for better quality additions.

The thing is though, whilst Steve Bruce has talked any number of times about concentrating mainly on loan deals, he has also kept dangling this carrot of Newcastle United still potentially buying Joe Willock in this window.

Before the 2020/21 season ended, Steve Bruce repeatedly said that he and Newcastle United would be really testing Arsenal’s ‘resolve’ this summer, indicating clearly that they would be trying to buy the midfielder if at all possible.

That has continued and only two weeks ago after the 3-2 friendly win at Doncaster, Steve Bruce stating: ‘We are still trying our utmost, whether it is on loan or to buy him [Joe Willock]. We are still trying.’

The two things are totally at odds with each other and only one can be true.

Do we believe Steve Bruce when he says buying Joe Willock is a possibility this summer, or…

Do we believe Steve Bruce when he says there is zero chance of buying any credible players and the best we can hope for is last minute loans or cheap as chips buys?

I think I know where I would place my bet.

Steve Bruce talking to Sky Sports – 6 August 2021:

“I am very quietly confident that we will bring in a couple of players before the window closes.

“That is for sure.

“What I did say to the supporters, to tell them, look, from the offset…

“We are in a market where we are looking for players with very little transfer fee, or obviously the loan market.

“Which we have done well, in the past.

“So, that’s what we are looking at.”

Steve Bruce asked about Newcastle United’s transfer window – Friday 23 July 2021:

“What are Arsenal going to do?

“They have brought in two midfield players…

“That’s our starting point, with Joe [Willock], because let’s be fair, he had an unbelievable three or four months with us.

“There has to be a time though where we know, is it going to be a yes or a no?

“We are only allowed two domestic loans and we are only allowed one from each club.

“So, there has to come a time when there is a cut-off and we have to find out what’s happening.

“We are still trying our utmost, whether it is on loan or to buy him [Joe Willock].

“We are still trying.

“I think everybody knows how difficult it is going to be as we haven’t got a lot of money.

“You always want players and money to go and improve the team, that’s our job [as managers / head coaches], but I don’t think I’m alone, I have never known it so quiet.

“We have to be patient.

“It’s very difficult but with not a lot of money swashing around, supporters know that it is going to be very difficult.”
