Steve Bruce has been speaking to the media on Tuesday morning.

The Newcastle United Head Coach talking to journalists ahead of the Wednesday night League Cup match against Burnley.

Newcastle United facing a vital period ahead of the international break, hoping to go through in the League Cup and avoid being in the relegation zone after the weekend’s Premier League matches.

However, Steve Bruce made clear that five Newcastle players definitely wouldn’t be facing Burnley, as he gave a fitness / injury update:

Jonjo Shelvey:

Jonjo Shelvey picked up a calf injury in pre-season but it’s the other one that’s now injured.

“It’s frustrating but I would think he’s going to be at least another three or four weeks.”

Isaac Hayden:

“We don’t think it’s serious [with Isaac Hayden].

“He’s sore at the moment but we don’t think he’s disturbed the knee he had problems with last season.

“Fingers crossed he might even be available at the weekend.”

Paul Dummett:

“He’s trained but he only trained yesterday with the group.

“I think tomorrow [against Burnley] will be too early for him but hopefully he’ll put himself in contention for the weekend – we’ll see how he trains this week.”

Karl Darlow:

“With Karl Darlow, I think it’s a case of seeing how his physical wellbeing is [in his recovery from Covid].

“I’ve had a problem [with a player in the past] who took at least six weeks, so we’ve got to be patient.”

Martin Dubravka:

“With Dubravka, we don’t want to set a time limit but we’ve hoping in eight weeks maybe.

“His wound has unfortunately got infected, which is going to set him back another couple of weeks.”

Steve Bruce stated also that he expects Matty Longstaff to go out on loan this week, so presumably you would expect him not to be involved either against Burnley.

Whilst no update on young midfielder Elliot Anderson who has been recovering from a hip problem.

Talking about what kind of team Newcastle fans can expect to see on the pitch on Wednesday night, Steve Bruce saying:

“We will be making changes because there are a lot of lads who need to play and get some minutes under their belt but we will be very, very strong.”
