Steve Bruce has been meeting the media on Friday morning.

The Newcastle United Head Coach talking to journalists ahead of Saturday’s match at Villa Park.

Newcastle needing to bounce back from conceding four at home and a very poor second half as West Ham won 4-2 at St James Park.

Steve Bruce revealing that he will be missing at least five Newcastle players at Villa on Saturday.

Jonjo Shelvey ruled out due to a new calf injury, Shelvey having missed most of pre-season with an injury to his other calf. Remains to be seen whether this is a short absence, or longer term…

Meanwhile, Paul Dummett and Elliot Anderson have made progress but won’t be available tomorrow.

Likewise, Karl Darlow still recovering from a bad bout of covid, whilst Martin Dubravka is also still out for who knows how long, having had a setback due to an infection.

Steve Bruce talking to BBC Newcastle ahead of playing Aston Villa:

“He [Jonjo Shelvey] has damaged his calf – the other one, unfortunately – so, he won’t make it.”

“Paul Dummett hurt his calf at Rotherham.

“He’s not far away – back on the grass – whether he’ll be able to play some part on Wednesday [against Burnley] is a debate we’ll have over the next couple of days.”

“I would have loved Joe Willock to have a few more minutes under his belt.

“The good thing about Joe is he’s a naturally fit young man. So, he’ll definitely be involved.

“Thankfully, there’s a bit of progress [with Elliot Anderson].

“It’s been immensely frustrating.

“There’s nothing worse than when you’re basically ordered to shut down and told to have complete rest.

“We hope he’s over the worst.”
