Steve Bruce brings Newcastle fans back down to reality with Sky Sports interview on Friday
Steve Bruce has been speaking today about the 2021 Premier League summer transfer window.
A bit of a surprise actually that anybody at Newcastle United realised it had opened.
After all, we have only reached day 59 of 84 without a single signing, 25 days now until it slams shut on Tuesday 31 August 2021.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, the online Newcastle United social media community was set alight by reports that Joe Willock was flying up to Tyneside having agreed to permanently move, the clubs agreeing a £25m deal.
However, all the reports quoted Talksport as the source and there was one small problem,
Talksport’s Football Editor having to go online and say that it was all a load of rubbish, that this was the one ‘exclusive’ the radio station aren’t claiming and stating they hadn’t mentioned anything at all on Friday claiming Willock was going to sign for Newcastle.
Now we have Steve Bruce adding to that, bringing Newcastle fans back down to reality with a Sky Sports interview on Friday…
Keith Downie of Sky Sports reporting via Twitter:
‘Steve Bruce confident he’ll have a couple of players signed by the end of the month – despite Newcastle being the only Premier League club yet to make a move this window.
‘On pursuit of Joe Willock:
“There will come a time when we have to move on. But I’m still hopeful.
“There’s a misconception that I’m not trying to sign players.
“I wouldn’t be doing my job properly if I wasn’t trying to improve us.
“I’m not just happy standing still. It’s frustrating.”
The Newcastle United Head Coach making it quite clear that there is no possibility of imminent action regarding Joe Willock, or indeed anybody else, in the near future.
It is truly bizarre though this continual blaming of Arsenal for Newcastle United not having made a single signing so far this summer.
Before this transfer window opened, Steve Bruce claimed he was confident of signing three or four quality players for the new season.
Now it is confident of a ‘couple of players’ before the window closes at the end of August.
Any number of times Steve Bruce has talked this window about the possibility of Newcastle buying Joe Willock, not just restricted to a possible (and very very unlikely) loan. Yet Bruce has then also added a number of times, that so far Newcastle United haven’t put a single bid in for any player. If Arsenal have never had an offer, how can they accept it…?
Regardless of that, this thing of wanting Newcastle United fans (and media) to believe that this is a proper ‘plan’, to hope they can bring in one or two players late in the transfer window, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, does it?
It appears to guarantee that any possible / potential NUFC signings this window can only be loan ones. Which then means you have to think that there is absolutely no guarantee at this point of Newcastle United / Steve Bruce landing any particular specific target, or else why not do it now?
What it says to me is Mike Ashley is insisting on waiting for all the other clubs to do their buys and make their moves for loan players, then Newcastle United will try and pick through the scraps of what is left at the last minute in the ‘bargain’ section.
This is truly torture this transfer window, as though Mike Ashley really wants to make it as difficult as possible for fans to continue actively supporting this Newcastle United team / set-up.
