Sean Dyche talks team selection ahead of Newcastle United clash and taking cups seriously…

Sean Dyche has been talking ahead of Wednesday match.

Burnley travelling to Tyneside to play Newcastle United in the second round of the League Cup.

Both managers already under pressure after a pointless opening. Sean Dyche and Burnley losing 2-1 at home to Brighton and then going down 2-0 at Liverpool.

Whilst Steve Bruce and Newcastle United lost 4-2 at home to West Ham on the opening day, before a 2-0 loss at Aston Villa.

The two managers could do with a morale boosting cup match BUT both have massive Premier League matches at the weekend before the international break, Newcastle home to Southampton and Burnley host Leeds.

Sean Dyche is unapologetic and says he has always treated the cups with ‘respect’ in his time at Burnley BUT that reality is that he has also always made clear that Premier League survival is the all important overwhelming thing.

Dyche stating that there will ‘likely’ be changes to his team for the Newcastle cup match.

It is interesting that the media are happy to label Sean Dyche as somebody who doesn’t take the cups seriously and yet don’t do the same with Steve Bruce, with the NUFC Head Coach repeatedly claiming he treats cups as seriously as the league.

Last season, Burnley’s first match of the season was a League Cup game against Sheffield United before three days later playing Leicester in the Premier League, Sean Dyche started the same eight players in both games, only three changes.

Whereas in contrast, Steve Bruce made a massive ten changes for the second round League Cup match last season, then nine changes to his team for the third round game.

Yet Sean Dyche is the one who doesn’t treat the cups with the proper respect…?

Whilst Steve Bruce looks likely to ‘win’ against Burnley when it comes to the number of changes he makes to his Premier League team that lost at Aston Villa, it remains to be seen who will get that morale boosting cup victory courtesy of potentially second choice players / teams.

It looks set to be a classic!

Sean Dyche pre-Newcastle United press conference:

“It’s likely there will be some changes [for the Newcastle cup match].

“We never thought anything other than we’ve got a tough start, on paper that is.

“It doesn’t always play out like that.

“We know that and having a Premier League club in the cup is another tough game, particularly away from home.

“That’s one of those things, but we will be ready.

“All managers…you want to field a team you believe can win.

“We have never not shown any importance of the cup competitions.

“We have always had respect for them.

“It’s just a simple reality and I have said every season that I’ve been here, that the main priority is the league.

“Whether you’re in the Championship trying to win it, as we have done, or whether you’re in the Premier League trying to be in it, then it’s always going to be a priority.”
