Santiago Munoz set to sign for Newcastle United – Tudn Mex
Earlier this month, it was claimed that Santiago Munoz was set to join Newcastle United.
The attacking player turned 19 on the 14 August and whilst born in Texas (USA), helped Mexico reach the final of the Under 17 World Cup and plays his club football in Mexico for Santos Laguna.
The transfer story was given extra coverage due to the similarity in name to Santiago Munez from the movie GOAL!, which gave Newcastle United a lot of spotlight around the world when it was released. The story of a young Mexican footballer joining up with Newcastle United to try and make it in European football.
Last season, the then 18 year old attacking player scored three goals in 11 league starts (and eight substitute appearances) for Mexican side Santos Laguna.
Tudn Mex are a Mexican media organisation and they reported a week ago that a move to Newcastle United was close to being finalised for Santiago Monoz.
On Wednesday, a team of players representing the Mexican league will take on an MLS eleven and Juan Reynoso is taking charge of the Mexican side.
In a press conference ahead of the match, he has revealed that Santiago Munoz has been left out of the Mexican side because he a move to an unspecified European club is now imminent.
Tudn Mex say that their information is that this unnamed club is indeed Newcastle United, that Santiago Munoz is gong to sign for.
Interesting to see if this one does become reality, although even if it does, Santiago Munoz would at least initially be joining up with the Newcastle United Under 23 set-up, rather than the first team.
