Preferred Newcastle team v Southampton with eight changes

When looking at this Newcastle team v Southampton…

You have to ask, is this a six pointer already?

After a couple of pretty farcical matches, I think it’s quite the understatement to say that it’s important to get some points on the board before the international break.

After two losses in the league, plus a bitter penalty shootout defeat in the League Cup, another loss would leave moods low and frustrations simmering for another couple of weeks.

With that, here’s my choice of Newcastle team v Southampton for this upcoming match tomorrow.

Goalkeeper – Woodman

One again, no real choice to make here, with the other options still out for the foreseeable. There might be some choices to make following the international break but we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

Centre backs – Lascelles, Schar and Fernandez

Pretty tricky to choose between the five fully fit CBs we have at the moment, as none have really covered themselves in glory.

Dummett is reported to be approaching full fitness and I might have snuck him in over Schar, but I don’t think he’ll be fit to start, given his fitness record.

I think sticking with the same central defence line up is probably the safest bet for this match, then things may change up after the break for the Man U game.

Wing backs – Murphy and Lewis

After reading some of the comments on my previous team choice and seeing the display against Villa, I have to concede that it is more important to get that defensive solidity back in place and Lewis certainly has more of a defensive head than Ritchie.

He came in with a lot of promise from Norwich, so hopefully given some chances he can make the position his own soon. Murphy I think still remains our best choice on the right, especially given his link up play with ASM we’ve seen in the past.

Midfield – Sean Longstaff, Willock and Almiron

I can’t imagine Hayden will be risked for this match and Shelvey is still out (thankfully), so I think these three are pretty nailed on starters here.

Matty Longstaff has headed up north for the season.

I can’t bear seeing Hendrick anywhere near a PL team line-up. Even the bench is too close for comfort with that one.

Attack – Wilson and ASM

Again, not really spoilt for choice with alternatives for this one and it looks set to stay that way for the season.

Hopefully Wilson has his shooting boots on and ASM can put on the same performances we’ve seen when he’s at his best.

Southampton are a pretty threadbare team in a lot of positions (takes one to know one) so we’ll have a fairly good idea of who they’ll line up with, and they’ve had a mixed start, capitulating against Everton, then keeping out a pretty profligate Man U for a respectable draw.

Hopefully we can get at them and get our season up and running, with these eight changes above from Wednesday in my Newcastle team v Southampton.

Fingers crossed anyone?
