Newcastle United Official Announcement – Third NUFC outgoing loan confirmed
Newcastle United have now confirmed just their third outgoing loan player of the summer so far.
Whilst incoming signings, loan and permanent, have been non-existent, the loaning out of players has been almost as deathly quiet.
Ahead of today, only Lewis Cass and Jake Turner had gone out on loan, Cass to Port Vale and Turner to Colchester.
Today’s official announcement from Newcastle United brings news that 21 year old central defender Kelland Watts has gone to League One Wigan for the rest of the 2021/22 season.
A little more interesting than the previous two, as Steve Bruce has really talked up Kelland Watts this summer, suggesting that he could force his way into the NUFC first team picture this season.
The 21 year old getting 201 minutes on the pitch in the pre-season friendlies, only 12 other NUFC outfield players getting more minutes.
With Florian Lejeune sold to Alaves and now Kelland Watts allowed out on loan, could it suggest that a new central defender could be signed (almost certainly on loan) in the near future? Steve Bruce had been widely reported as wanting to add another centre-back as one of his main transfer hopes this window.
Newcastle United Official Announcement:
Newcastle United defender Kell Watts has joined League One side Wigan Athletic on loan for the duration of the 2021/22 season.
Centre half Watts has linked up with the Latics after featuring for the Magpies during pre-season, with his most recent appearance coming in United’s 3-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday.
He will now join Leam Richardson’s side for the rest of the campaign as he bids to gain more experience in a league in which he excelled last term.
Watts, 21, spent 2020/21 on loan at Plymouth Argyle, making a total of 50 appearances and scoring three times as he established himself at Home Park.
The youngster, who made his Premier League debut for Newcastle against Liverpool on the final day of the 2019/20 season, has also spent time out on loan at Stevenage and Mansfield Town in recent seasons.
Watts could be part of the Latics’ squad for their Carabao Cup tie at Hull City on Tuesday night – but failing that, is likely to be involved when Richardson’s side welcome Rotherham United to the DW Stadium for their first home game of the League One season on Saturday.
