Newcastle United make approach for Ederson from Corinthians – Report
Newcastle United have made an approach for defensive midfielder Ederson, according to media in Brazil.
Globo report that the 22 year old’s agent had been contacted by representatives of Newcastle United, to register an interest in buying Ederson (Full name – Ederson Jose dos Santos Lourenco da Silva).
However, following the agent contacting Corinthians about Newcastle’s interest, the Brazilian club say that they haven’t heard anything direct from Newcastle United so far.
The league season in Brazil runs from May to December and at the moment Ederson is on loan at Fortaleza.
The Globo report says that the midfielder is due to be at Fortaleza until the end of the season in December and for any potential Newcastle transfer to happen, that loan situation would need to be brought to a conclusion. The loan deal has no buying option agreed according to the Brazilian media outlet.
Ederson has helped Fortaleza up to fourth in the table after 14 matches played, ironically seven places higher in the table than his parent club Corinthians.
The defensive midfielder has played in 13 of the 14 league games so far this season for Fortaleza and scored one goal.
Globo also report that recently it has been revealed that Corinthians want / need to generate at least £13m in player sales to help sort their finances.
Loan club Fortaleza have told the Brazilian media outlet that so far they have received no contact about Ederson potentially heading to Newcastle United and the Premier League.
In 25 appearances for Corinthians, Ederson has scored three goals and is contracted until 31 January 2025.
Up until now, Under 20s is the highest level that the player has been called up for in terms of the national team.
With Mike Ashley restricting Newcastle United to no signings so far and minimal money set to be allowed to be spent, if any. A punt on a player such as Ederson wouldn’t be the biggest surprise, especially with regular media updates in the UK saying that Steve Bruce is desperate to sign a more mobile box to box defensive midfielder.
The Globo report does also warn though that even if all parties did want a transfer to happen, Ederson would need to meet all the requirements to get a visa to play in England.
Another name for the list of possible Newcastle United signings and a lot more believable than the embarrassing reports local and national English media insist on keep making, linking NUFC to some big name / price signings this summer.
