Newcastle United confirm 13th goalkeeper of Premier League era
Newcastle United are set to play their thirteenth Premier League goalkeeper.
After 26 seasons of Premier League football, the 27th will feature a new addition in the first game of the season.
Steve Bruce confirming (see below) that Freddie Woodman will be in the starting line up.
Karl Darlow is still recovering from a nasty bout of covid, whilst Martin Dubravka is recuperating after an operation on a broken metatarsal.
After Freddie Woodman played the full friendly against Norwich in the final warm up game, it looked obvious that he would start against West Ham.
In the 26 seasons so far, there have been 996 Premier League matches. With two seasons of 42 matches (1993/94 and 1994/95), then 24 of 38 games each.
The 12 who have featured in those 996 Premier League games so far are:
Pavel Srnicek, Tommy Wright, Mike Hooper, Shaka Hislop, Shay Given, Steve Harper, Jon Karelse, Tim Krul, Rob Elliot, Jak Alnwick, Karl Darlow, Martin Dubravka, with then Freddie Woodman to make it 13 in the 997th PL game for NUFC.
My personal ratings for the 12 Newcastle United goalkeepers to have played in the Premier League, with a very easy first choice:
Here’s hoping that one day I will be putting Freddie Woodman even above Shay Given…
Steve Bruce – 13 August 2021:
“Freddie Woodman will get his chance [on Sunday].
“He’s waited patiently. He’s played for the last two years. Always, there’s somebody falling down with injury or illness, and it opens the door for somebody else.
“It’s Freddie’s big opportunity, he’s waited patiently, but I’ve been very, very pleased with what I’ve seen over the last six weeks in particular – and the reports that we had from Swansea have always been very, very positive about the kid.”
