Newcastle 2 Southampton 2 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s lucky draw

Newcastle 2 Southampton 2 – Saturday 28 August 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Despite twice taking the lead, Newcastle United very lucky to get a point after Southampton dominated most of the match.

Matthew Robson:

“Dear me.

“Not sure what to say after that, moments of high excitement in the midst of a shocking display really, certainly in terms of tactics and intent.

“Steve Bruce should be ashamed, sending his team out to defend from the first whistle, seemingly determined to make sure of a point at last after three defeats already.

“Newcastle did get a draw but no thanks to Bruce’s ridiculous negativity, the game ending 2-2 and not 0-0.

“Steve Bruce booed at half-time and full-time, with chants against him as well in both halves.

“With their goals and overall play, Wilson and ASM simply showing us that this team could be capable of far more with a proper manager.

“Southampton will be kicking themselves as they left with only one point, after being invited to dominate by Bruce.

“If we can’t have a go at Southampton at home, who will this idiot let Newcastle go out on the attack against?”

Billy Miller:

“Didn’t watch the game.

“I’m down in London with the kids.

“Happened to be at the Natural History Museum where there was a special exhibition, in the Dinosaur section, dedicated to Bruce’s footballing mentality.

“All jokes aside, I was at the museum, but was regularly updating the stats/commentary.

“When Southampton had had 6 shots to 0 and 68% possession after 25 minutes I felt like it was destined to be more of the same.

“Obviously we took the lead and I felt like the Brucie luck might be making a return but predictably we were pegged back.

“Less predictably we took the lead at the death before completing our hat-trick of penalty concessions.

“What’s the record for the most consecutive games conceding penalties in the Premier League? We’ve got to be close to breaking it.

“That’s 4 games, 1 point and a cup exit so far this season.

“Now we get a nice break before heading to Man United and Ronaldo.

“On a positive, I had £15 on the team managed by that useless ex manager of ours and turned it into £51!”

“Great to see VAR influencing our game yet again.

“Is this going to go on all season?

“Wouldn’t it be easier to just give the other team the win?

“Anyway, we were totally outplayed and didn’t deserve to win.

“Looking at the statistics from the game is enough to make most fans physically sick.

“So, three games in and I’m already thinking of which teams we might actually be able to beat.

“Norwich are the only one by my reckoning.

“Wonder what the odds are on us getting a win from our next game.

“Probably enough to allow me to retire from a pound bet.”

Dave Punton:

“The ecstasy to the agony.

“Football eh. That’s a pain that one.

“A win snatched away in stoppage time by a penalty conceded by Lascelles.

“A great chance to pinch a win goes begging.

“The VAR yet again.

“Such a fine margin between everyone going home happy and everyone going home peeved.

“First point on the board but what a wasted opportunity to take all three.

“The narrative with Bruce, Ashley and general supporter unrest makes it feel so much worse.”

Paul Patterson:

“Defensive nonsense and can’t even hold on to a lead with minutes to go.

“Stupid substitutions and once again didn’t use a goalscorer (Gayle) when he had subs available.

“Meanwhile “The Mighty Rafa” has Everton joint top of the league…”

Nat Seaton:

“My pessimistic self thought a draw before the game (always hoping for better!) and unbelievably that’s what it turned out to be after a mad last 5 minutes.

“Thought we had taken all three points with ASM’s blast into the back of the net but again Lascelles gives away a penalty and we end up with just one point.

“With this squad and tactics it’s going to be a long hard season…”
