Newcastle 0 Burnley 0 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction to Wednesday’s defeat on penalties

Newcastle 0 Burnley 0 (Burnley win 4-3 on penalties) – Wednesday 25 August 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

A better second half after a shocking opening 45 when neither side had a shot on target, Gayle hitting the bar but ultimately goalless and decided on penalties…in Burnley’s favour.

Dale Thompson:

“Yes it was a better second half and Newcastle were a bit better than Burnley…but that isn’t saying much.

“Burnley no doubt came here hoping to get knocked out and going through the motions, only to find a United side incapable of giving them their wish.

“Steve Bruce yet again says he would put out a strong team, then changes every single outfield player apart from Jamaal Lascelles.

“A shame for the legions of munchkins that come to these games, that instead of ASM, Wilson, Willock and Almiron, they instead watch the second team.

“Three of that quartet did come on for the very final stages but their decisive contribution was to miss the penalties that knocked NUFC out, ASM and Almiron the culprits.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Another year.

“Another wasted opportunity in the League Cup.

“This is always our best chance to get to Wembley and we blow it. Infuriating.”

Steve Hickey:

“A non-event with no goals, between 2 teams with no chance of glory.

“No entertainment for those who attended, no hope for the new supporters attending for the first time.

“No worthwhile outcome and no credit to our players.

“No excuses can hide this shambles.”

Dave Punton:

“Nothing much changes with NUFC does it!

“If there is a way to raise hopes and then dash them you can bet your bottom dollar it’ll happen to this lot.

“Many, me included, are past crying about this league cup, and a side showing nine changes in an all Premier League tie was always asking for a long old night ahead. And so it proved.

“Into the lottery of penalty kicks and it’s ASM and Almiron fluffing their lines, the latter of the two at the key moment in the shoot out.

“Saturday’s opponents ran in 8 goals at Newport while we were huffing and puffing.

“We’re not far off a poor start to the season becoming an absolute shocker.”

GToon:

“With the half time score 0-0 and having had 13 shots with one on target I said to my mate we would draw and then go on to lose on penalties.

“Guaranteed. What a joke of a club.

“I’m beginning to seriously lose interest in them.

“In my 50 years supporting this lot I can count two, maybe three penalty successes and loads of defeats.

“We are lucky Scunthorpe United aren’t in our league (another claret and blue team).”

Paul Patterson:

“Forget our game tonight.

“The Southampton result is more worrying.

“The Saints winning 8-0 away from home doesn’t bode well for us this weekend…”

Nat Seaton:

“Second half better than a poor first half.

“Plenty of chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.

“So a penalty shoot out and you know what that means for us…

“Out of a cup after one game, no surprise there then!

“Here’s hoping for something better on Saturday.”
