Kevin Phillips thinks Steve Bruce is great because not moaning – Plus another very strange claim
Amongst the long long list of nobodies who feel qualified to talk about what is happening at Newcastle United, is Kevin Phillips.
Along with so many others desperate to carve out a post-playing career as a pundit, the former Sunderland striker thinks he can give an ‘expert’ insight into something he knows absolutely nothing about.
The typical lazy pundit who doesn’t believe in doing even minimal research before opening his mouth.
Back in February 2020, Kevin Phillips came out with this classic about Mike Ashley:
“Newcastle fans probably don’t want to hear me say it but he [Mike Ashley] has put his money where his mouth is and there’s no question about that.
“It’s just some of the decisions he made obviously upset the Newcastle supporters and they don’t see a way back for him.”
Now Kevin Phillips has been speaking about the goalkeeping situation at Newcastle United, with Dubravka’s injury and Darlow’s covid illness, leaving the way wide open for Freddie Woodman to finally get his Premier League chance.
Phillips says that Woodman should be able to cope with the pressure and I agree, with the 24 year old keeper having proved himself to be the best goalkeeper in the Championship these past two seasons on loan at Swansea, winning the second tier ‘Golden Glove’ award for most clean sheets in 2020/21.
However, when it gets to actual details, Kevin Phillips has his ignorance fully exposed, declaring that if Freddie Woodman makes it in the Premier League: ‘It will be good for the Newcastle fans to have a hometown boy there too.’
Even the quickest check would have told our Mackem friend that Freddie Woodman’s ‘hometown’ is Croydon, London, not Newcastle Upon Tyne. Freddie only moving up here from Crystal Palace when he was 16, with his dad on the NUFC coaching staff no doubt playing a big part. Ironically, NUFC’s fourth goalkeeper, Mark Gillespie is a lifelong fan and born and bred on Tyneside, yet obviously Kevin Phillips also totally oblivious of that fact as well.
The laughs from Kevin Phillips don’t stop there, with big praise for Steve Bruce having ‘never moaned about injuries’ this pre-season.
Well, I’m not too sure if that is totally correct BUT what I do know for sure, if that over the course of his entire first two seasons at Newcastle United, Steve Bruce has never stopped moaning about injuries, using them regularly amongst a whole host of other excuses as to why performances have been so poor so often, as well as long runs of poor results – including only two wins in twenty one matches in the middle of last season.
Kevin Phillips speaking to Football Insider – 1 August 2021:
“Once again Steve Bruce is having to deal with injuries on the eve of a new season.
“I feel sorry for him.
“He’s never moaned about those injuries, he just gets on with it.
“If [Freddie] Woodman is handed that big opportunity I’m sure he’ll take it.
“Whether he can remain the number one for the full season remains to be seen.
“He’s good enough to cope with the pressure, it’s amazing in football, you see scenarios like this all the time.
“Players get injured and a replacement comes in and they can be a superstar.
“It could be a big season for him.
“It will be good for the Newcastle fans to have a hometown boy there too.”
