Jamie Carragher has got the measure of the situation at Newcastle United.

The 2021/22 Premier League season kicking off at St James Park on Sunday afternoon.

Jamie Carragher though posing the question – where’s the hope?

The former Liverpool player making the point that unlike the fans of pretty much every other club, Newcastle supporters have seen that hope taken away by Mike Ashley.

Fans heading into a 15th season under this owner, with according to Jamie Carragher, only hopeful survival on the agenda.

A recent major survey of Premier League fans by The Athletic, has shown only Everton fans were less positive than Newcastle fans ahead of the new season.

On Saturday, Rafa Benitez managed an opening day 3-1 win for the blue scousers, the first time in six years they’d won a Premier League having trailed at half-time. So no doubt their positivity levels have risen to a degree.

What can Newcastle United fans expect this season, will it be as bleak as Jamie Carragher believes?

We are about to find out.

Jamie Carragher speaking on The Overlap live fan debate:

“I think it is a bit of a disgrace really, with Newcastle United.

“I don’t think there is too much difference between Leeds and Newcastle, both realistic, a dream to win the league but you don’t really expect it.

“Every fan has hope…but not every fan has real belief that it is going to happen…but you just have this buzz.

Can Rafa Benitez nick a cup [with Everton], can Marcelo Bielsa do this [with Leeds].

“With Newcastle, there is just absolutely none of that.

“It’s the biggest thing you need as a football fan…

“To have hope.

“Most supporters don’t expect to win something…but they want to go into the season with a little bit of a buzz.

“With Newcastle United, it is just so flat, so dead, that comes from Mike Ashley.

“If you look at Newcastle’s team now, you think that if they stay up they have done well, because it is an average team.”
