Former top referee rules on this controversial Newcastle v West Ham incident

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.

The former top referee has now given his call on the Newcastle v West Ham match.

Dermot Gallagher looking at a key incident, in the game which the visitors eventually won 4-2, at the end of an eventful 90 minutes.

The incident that Dermot Gallagher considers is that with the score at 2-2, referee Martin Atkinson awards a penalty.

Antonio taking the penalty which was saved by Freddie Woodman, though with the Newcastle players slow to react it was an easy task for Soucek to stroll into the box and tuck away the rebound. West Ham going 3-2 up and then quickly making it 4-2 to dominate the second half and a comfortable three points in the end.

However, should that penalty have been given?

Jacob Murphy penalised for allegedly fouling Pablo Fornals, what does Dermot Gallagher think?

The former top referee believing that Martin Atkinson should have gone over to the pitchside monitor to double check his decision, with Gallagher believing he would then have rightly overturned the decision.

Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:

“Jacob Murphy is adjudged to have fouled Pablo Fornals inside the box and West Ham are awarded a penalty.

“The incident is looked at by VAR before the on-field decision over awarding the spot-kick is not overturned.

“Referee Martin Atkinson did not use the pitchside monitor to back up his decision, much to Newcastle manager Steve Bruce’s frustration.”

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“Incorrect decision, no penalty.”

Dermot Gallagher says:

“My gut reaction when I saw it was that he’d got the ball.

“When I saw the replay, I could see that he’d got the ball.

“When you look at an incident over and over again, there’s an element of doubt.

“If you can make your mind up quickly with one replay, that to me then is an error.

“If VAR had sent him over to the screen, I do believe Martin Atkinson would’ve changed his mind.”
