Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports.
The former top referee has now given his call on the Aston Villa v Newcastle match.
Dermot Gallagher looking at a key incident, in a game which the home side eventually won 2-0.
Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:
‘A deep cross from the left is headed back into the middle, Tyrone Mings heads the ball towards goal and it hits Jamaal Lascelles’ outstretched arm.
‘The incident is looked at by VAR who recommend the on-pitch referee looks at it again.
‘Referee David Coote goes to the pitchside monitor and then gives the penalty.”
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“Correct decision, penalty.”
Dermot Gallagher says:
“I think penalty and I think this falls into the bracket…where we will never get the grey area eliminated but we are trying yo narrow it.
“If you put your arm out, that far, away from the body, and the ball strikes your arm, it is going to be a penalty.
“If you put your arm out like that and the ball strikes it and the ball is going towards goal, I think you know you run that risk.
“The VAR has looked at it, he thinks it is a penalty, he recommends the referee goes to have a look at it.
“I thought it was a penalty and it was no surprise to me when VAR says have a look.
“The referee has a look and (the referee says) yes I didn’t see that the first time around.
