Former Newcastle United star knocks Steven Gerrard’s Rangers out of Champions League
A brilliant night for Jon Dahl Tomasson.
The former Newcastle United star taking his Malmo side to Ibrox and triumphing against the odds.
Malmo had won the first leg of this Champions League qualifier and came to Glasgow leading 2-1, only for a Morelos goal on Tuesday night after 18 minutes to level it.
When the visitors’ Bonke Innocent (interesting name!) was sent off just on the stroke of half-time, it looked like a gift for Rangers to go on and win the qualifier.
However, Jon Dahl Tomasson masterminded a brilliant second half display, with two goals from Antonio Colak (53 and 57 minutes) in the end seeing Malmo through 5-3 on aggregate.
Former Newcastle striker Jon Dahl Tomasson took over at Malmo in January 2020 and won the Swedish title in his first season, this now on Tuesday night a massive result for the manager and his club. A huge blow though for Rangers, who now face a qualifier to compete in the Europa League this season.
Jon Dahl Tomasson was a Newcastle United signing where it was a case of right player, wrong time.
He arrived at St James Park as Kenny Dalglish was dismantling Kevin Keegan’s team and Hall and Shepherd stopping reinvestment in the team at the very worst time, as Newcastle competed in the Champions League for the first time. Dalglish selling the likes of Les Ferdinand and bringing in veterans Rush, Barnes and Pearce, with then the ultimate blow for Tomasson and Newcastle being a pre-season injury for Alan Shearer that massively impacted the 1997/98 season.
The highlight for the Danish striker and NUFC that season, was when he started in the 3-2 win over Barcelona, playing alongside hat-trick hero Tino Asprilla on that famous night 24 (TWENTY FOUR) years ago.
Moving on after only one full season, Jon Dahl Tomasson went to Feyenoord where he won the UEFA Cup in 2002, before helping AC Milan lift the Champions League in 2003, scoring three goals in their run to the final.
Emulating that 2003 success might prove a little beyond Jon Dahl Tomasson but a massive result regardless in this third round qualifier. Malmo started in the first round qualifiers and now face a fourth tie, if they win their play-off with Ludogorets then Tomasson and his team will be in the group stages of the Champions League.
Steven Gerrard after his Rangers side lost to Jon Dahl Tomasson and Malmo:
“We did really well for 45 minutes but we got two restarts badly wrong and paid for it.
“The most frustrating part is that we’ve lost the second half to 10 men.
To be 1-0 up and then go 2-1 down, a bit of fear and panic set in.
“We’ve got the second-half performance wrong and that’s on all of us.
“We’ve lost three games out of four and, at Rangers, that’s not good enough.”
