Day 57 transfer window update – Or ‘Wednesday’ as Newcastle United fans call it…

Welcome to day 57 of the 2021 Premier League summer transfer window.

The latest significant deal on Wednesday (4 August 2021) morning seeing a £30m arrival of Leon Bailey.

The now former Bayer Leverkusen winger added to Aston Villa’s squad.

This now takes total Premier League spending so far towards £600m, though one club is valiantly trying to keep that ever rising total down.

Step forward Mike Ashley and Newcastle United. The only Premier League club yet to sign a single player in this transfer window.

Embarrassingly, Steve Bruce has once again claimed that hardly anybody is spending money this summer, despite all the evidence to the contrary (see below).

Even worse, Bruce stating at the weekend that Newcastle United are doing absolutely everything they can to sign Joe Willock and other players, yet in the next breath he admits that NUFC have not made a single bid for a player so far.

Only at Newcastle United…

With not a single player bought in the January 2021 transfer window, we could well see Mike Ashley repeating his extraordinary transfer window ‘activity’ of seven / eight years ago. Not a single player was bought in the summer 2013 and January 2014 transfer windows as Mike Ashley blocked all spending, a period of 18 months without one player bought by Newcastle United. Only 27 days of this transfer window to go and Mike Ashley seemingly going for a repeat of that ‘achievement’…
