Burnley fans comment ahead of playing cup and relegation rivals Newcastle United

Burnley fans have been having a lively debate ahead of the game at St James Park.

Not exactly cup fever but they see themselves in a very similar position to Newcastle United.

Burnley fans seeing Newcastle very much relegation rivals as well as cup rivals.

Most Burnley fans seemingly very pragmatic about the cup competitions, accepting that the Premier League takes absolute precedence.

Indeed, many of them appear to take for granted that Newcastle United will have a stronger line-up tonight…

Burnley fans commenting via their Up The Clarets message board:

‘I live in Newcastle, they don’t seem to understand me when I try and explain that we have literally no ‘squad’ players to bring in. They are whinging about having to play £40m Joelinton and £10m Gayle up front!!’

‘I’m going tonight.

I have absolutely no confidence in us getting anything at all and I’m not really that bothered (although come kick-off, I’ll be desperate for a win. obvs 😆 )

But…I live in Newcastle, they feel EXACTLY the same way!!’

‘I think that might be typical Geordie cynicism.

If you compare their second string to ours, particularly in midfield, its a no contest.

Unfortunately we’ll be forced to play some of our starting XI in the middle, and we know how that could go…’

‘I hope I’m wrong but I can see Newcastle will sell on Allan Saint-Maximin for a big fee which will leave them with plenty in the coffers to sneak Maxwell Cornet from under our noses with a better personal offer. Fingers crossed …’

‘Given our usual approach to cup competitions (exit at the earliest opportunity) can we not forfeit the game and avoid the risk of injury to an already inadequate squad.’

‘With a squad pared to the bone after a succession of fruitless transfer windows prioritising Cup competitions will not even be considered by Dyche.

Injuries cannot be risked so early into the season.’

‘Even with our attitude towards cup games Newcastle have some goalkeeper injury problems so given that maybe and it’s only a maybe we might just go through.’

‘Just play anyone not in the first team, can’t afford the injuries in a cup we are never going to try to win.’

‘We aren’t going to win this trophy anyway, so we may as well get our participation over and done with as soon as possible.

Plus, losing to Newcastle is hardly in the same category as being turfed out by the likes of Accy is it.

Of the 2 games this week the Leeds game is far more important.’

‘Should treat it as a PL game and try to actually win a game.’

‘With Westwood and Vyds still doubtful for Sunday, it has to be the reserves. On this occasion no other choice.’

‘Hardly any point risking too many first teamers. Although would you want to get a hammering and give their morale a kicking?’

‘Appears to be essentially 2 leagues emerging.

And at a rough guess the relegated teams will come from 3 of Brentford, Brighton, Burnley, Newcastle, Norwich, Palace, Southampton, Watford or Wolves.’

‘I see Newcastle, Palace, Brighton, Watford, Norwich, Southampton and Brentford as our level.’
