Burnley 1 Newcastle 0 – Watch match highlights here as NUFC lose behind closed doors friendly
Tuesday afternoon ended Burnley 1 Newcastle 0.
A secret behind closed doors friendly between two Premier League sides, with Sean Dyche seeing his side win 1-0.
A more comfortable win than the scoreline suggests as the home side had the upper hand and created far more chances (watch below).
The extra friendly had apparently been fitted in to give players who hadn’t featured much in pre-season some time on the pitch, especially key attacking players.
However, eight were missing, with the likes of Almiron, Saint-Maximin and Wilson surely big doubts for when the Premier League kicks off for NUFC in 11 days time against West Ham.
In their absence the biggest threat was Joelinton, he had two chances (watch below) but managed to hit the post with a header from close range when he should have scored, whilst a strike from the edge of the box was too close to the keeper to give him problems.
At the back, problems once more for United, the defence cut open for the winner and the midfield yet again struggling for legs, whilst in the air Newcastle also look vulnerable at set-pieces.
One positive was that both Freddie Woodman and Mark Gillespie did well, as they once again shared goalkeeping duties.
Watch the action below:
Here’s hoping for some encouragement when Newcastle play Norwich at St James Park on Saturday in the final friendly, then of course everything crossed that it all comes right eight days later when the Hammers visit.
A signing or two in the meantime wouldn’t do any harm…
