BBC Sport comments from neutrals about Steve Bruce and Newcastle after West Ham – Interesting
Really interesting reading through these BBC Sport comments reflecting on Newcastle’s opening day 4-2 defeat to West Ham.
The comments from neutrals especially telling.
As Newcastle fans wonder exactly what this season holds for them.
A club that neutrals are divided on, whether to sympathise with, or laugh at, this never ending nothingness of supporting Newcastle United year after year.
The general consensus being that this opening match at St James Park was great to watch for neutrals but big question marks surrounding Steve Bruce and his team. Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson getting widespread praise but weaknesses elsewhere and concerns about the overall ‘plan’ from the NUFC Head Coach.
The BBC Sport readers comments, mainly from neutrals, some interesting insight with outside views after 4-2 home defeat to West Ham:
‘Newcastle – how they stay up year after year is beyond me. Average players, no consistency. Like the look of West Ham though, could be another good season if they can build on this result.’
‘To listen to Steve Bruce, he must be the unluckiest manager in the whole history of football. Every single point that his team drops is someone else’s fault…’
‘Well, that was some game. Congratulations West Ham; commiserations Newcastle. If every game this season is like that… It’s going to be a hell of a season!’
‘Yes relegation awaits Newcastle.’
‘Most teams that concede 4 tend to lose lol. Looks like another rollercoaster season for Newcastle. Hope their fans buckle up for the ride.’
‘As a West Ham I was really worried in the first half an hour as they they really weren’t very good at all. Glad they managed to turn things around, helped by Newcastle throwing in the towel.’
‘What a game and performance by the Hammers, I thourghly enjoyed watching the game.’
‘Great game for the neutral.
West Ham showed the fight they had last season.
Newcastle’s defense hasn’t improved.
Some cracking games this weekend.’
‘West Ham’s midfield overpowered and outplayed Newcastle.’
‘Only one team in it in the second half. The penalty was not the turning point, West Ham totally outplayed them and could of had a hatful.’
‘Slow and not very fit compared to west ham, might be first game but is it a case of here we go again.’
‘Can’t believe bbc motd are showing a dull fest 1-0 bore in North London first, ahead of this six goal thriller!!
Typical bbc money talks!’
‘Steve Bruce….how is he still employed?’
‘Just hope we get a new manager that will improve Bruce’s clueless methods.’
‘Happy hammers and a truly brill result but that maximin, what a handful, cant see newcastle holding on to him.’
‘Fair play West Ham, but on other hand what the hells going on with Newcastle. Need changes & very quick. Feel for the supporters. UTV.’
‘Don’t understand Bruce. 5 at the back in 2nd half, overrun in midfield. SM and CW living on scraps.’
‘Do not agree the pen changed the game.
West Ham started the 2nd half much better than NUFC and scored the equaliser on 53 mins. From that point, there was only ever gonna be one winner. If they hadn’t got the goal from the pen they would have got the third in the next 10 mins, were all over the Toon at that stage.’
‘Happy with the result but this will paper over cracks that show we need at least three players of quality to the squad. The goals we conceded owed more to poor defending than great opportunity taken. Better teams, like Leceister will not give up leads.’
‘When you bring on Joelinton with 20 mins to go and 2 goals down, you deserve everything you get. Never forget that Joelinton cost £40m. Any other club and he would’ve been crucified by now.’
‘What was Bruce doing starting Krafth in central defence instead of Lascelles or Schar?
No wonder the defence was a bit shambolic in second half. Krafth and Linton are the two worst players in the current squad Shelvey is rubbish too.’
‘Bruce is right it was a harsh penalty but if he thinks that was the main reason we lost he’s delusional. No shots on target in the second half in a game we were supposedly chasing & some school boy defending. Why he persists with counter attacking when we can’t actually defend I’ll never know. It’s his third season in charge so any mistakes he makes he can’t seriously blame anybody else.’
‘Entertaining stuff. 1st half Allan SM was a real handful, looking like he might win the game on his own striding through the West Ham midfield from deep, & Wilson looking dangerous. WH should still have been level at HT, missing decent chances. 2nd half was so different. Rice, leggy in the first half, got a 2nd wind and totally dominated the rest of the game. Toon faded posing no goal threat.’
‘As a West Ham fan, can anyone tell me if Saint Maximin is available for transfer, what a player!’
‘From the outside looking in. It appears that Newcastle never seem to get their Managerial appointments right. Perhaps it could be that they are not supported. For example Benitez is probably an exception to this but was he supported by the internal powers that be. It’s a one club City and the fans deserve better than they get.’
