Aston Villa 2 Newcastle 0 – Instant NUFC fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s second defeat of season
Aston Villa 2 Newcastle 0 – Saturday 21 August 3pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.
A goal in half seeing Newcastle United deservedly beaten, a few decent moments but a lack of adventure from Steve Bruce failing to take advantage of having ASM, Willock, Almiron and Wilson on the pitch together.
“Another poor performance, apart from a decent spell midway through the first half.
“I’m not happy about saying the things that Bruce will trot out as excuses but I’m infuriated by this.
“It was annoying early on how incurable cheat Ashley Young was destroying all our attacks by diving and whining but, after giving a penalty that was the right call, VAR utterly took the p.ss with the disallowed pen.
“Those millimetres offsides are a joke and I’m sure every other incident like that this year has not been given. Add in that the keeper should have been sent off and we’ve been robbed of a genuine chance to get something from the game.
“The performance was below par again, and not being able to defend a long throw in this day and age is unforgivable.
“But for the second week in a row, big decisions have gone against us at key points in the game when they’ve been far from clear cut.
“Miserable result and real alarm bells should be ringing.
“Only silver lining may be that it might prompt the clueless clowns in charge to recruit some reinforcements.”
“Firstly, a word about the referee.
“Looked like he had forgotten his whistle as all sorts of challenges went unpunished in first 15 minutes, then he decided to blow every 30 seconds and completely out his depth.
“Finally deciding Callum Wilson was a naughty boy and giving him nothing.
“No problem with the penalty but I am afraid the goalkeeper should have been out for the cross 2 seconds earlier…… and that is his weakness.
“Biggest disappointment is Almiron, looks like he is running through treacle!
“Oh yeah. Why was that not red?? Offside or not!”
“We lost our second game in a row.
“Willock didn’t break the record.
“We’re 19th in the table.
“That’s the story of today.”
“Are the top six and Masters controlling VAR too?
“Tbh I thought it would be 3 or 4 so it’s no surprise really.
“We are playing teams who have owners who take being in this league seriously so we are always going to lose.
“Apart from Richie at left back and the “refusing to wave Woodman” I would say that’s our best team.
“No shots on target says it all (there was one supposedly but I didn’t see it).
“It would appear that global warming is also causing large volumes of dust to gather over NE1 and no amount of dusting down and going again is going to work this time round.”
“Not at all surprised by the score. The same as the last 2 seasons.
“VAR will grab the headlines for the wrong reasons but in truth once things got going, we haven’t threatened their goal enough. That is 6 past us in two games.
“Conflicting reports emerging on the deferred arbitration. Previously stated that sufficient evidence wasn’t forthcoming from the Saudis, who had lost interest.
“Latest version is that the whole consortium found out with the fans and were shocked and saddened by the deferment agreement, with the deal now hanging by a thread.
“None of this matters of course if we get relegated.
“I don’t think Mike Ashley would be too upset.
“Prize money of £100m plus and the additional sale of our star players who won’t want Championship football.
“Everyone’s a winner, except of course, the fans.”
“A bright start to the game and then Villa woke up.
“It’s hard not to overreact, and we have remind ourselves we are just two games into the new season, but, I’m also left with a feeling of where is the first win coming from?
“We can’t score, we are terrible at the back and we haven’t added any new attacking dimensions.
“Villa knew full well that shackling ASM is half the battle.
“A sickener to concede on the stroke of half time and then the penalty kills the game off.
“The VAR hasn’t gone our way either, adding insult to injury, on a ground where there’s no love lost between the two sets of fans, let’s face it.
“Steve Bruce was in a radio phone in on Thursday night. He came across ok, but tellingly he did reveal that he and Steve Agnew took the defensive coaching sessions, while Graeme Jones looks after the forwards.
“Well, that’s six goals we have shipped in two games.
“Standing still over the summer, and largely over the last 5 years, finally coming home to roost?
“Supporting this club is rarely any fun under Mike Ashley and when you look at some of the other clubs who are being progressive it does become a worry that one year we will finally go off the cliff edge.
“We desperately needed that first win but at Villa Park today we leave empty handed. Grim.”
“Anyone surprised again?
“Newcastle woeful and that’s probably our best 11!
“Direct your anger at Bruce, Charnley, Ashley.
“I won’t hold my breath.”
“One of the questions that should have been put to Bruce the other night should have been – “Now that your fawning over Dwight Gayle has been revealed as a sham, will you perhaps do something revolutionary like actually playing him while we are losing games?”
“A joke of a Head Coach…”
“Well, after two games there is only Norwich below us in the league!
“It looks like it is going to be more of the same yet again this season.
“No excuses about not having ASM or Wilson available, the only new signing in the team and we simple are nowhere good enough to compete with the likes of Aston Villa.
“Southampton at home next week will be a test as to where we are going to be able to pick up points with the team/squad that we have, as it doesn’t look like we will be investing in any new players before the transfer deadline in 10 days.”
