Newcastle United situation 23 days into 2021 summer transfer window

The 2021 summer Premier League transfer window opened on Wednesday 9 June.

We are now into the 23rd day of this window and Steve Bruce made this prediction ahead of it.

Steve Bruce: “I think what you are going to see, especially during the pandemic, is that we haven’t seen many big transfers [in January 2021] and I can’t see things changing in the summer.”

As we move into July things are really hotting up, with the signings of Jadon Sancho (Man Utd), Patson Daka and Ryan Bertrand (both Leicester) adding around £100m onto the running total.

That running total (see below) now running well in excess of £200m.

Any number of rumours around as usual but amongst the signings that look very very likely to happen you

Arsenal set to buy Ben White (£50m), Manuel Locatelli (£30m+) and Nuno Tavares (£9m), Norwich meanwhile set to sign Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour on loan before this week is out. Man Utd are in talks to sign Raphael Varane (£43m), whilst Man City have had a £100m bid for Harry Kane turned down and that final transfer fee set to be more like £150m. These signings alone would take the total spend soaring above £500m.

Rafa Benitez says he has an agreed list of transfer targets with Everton set to back their new manager, whilst similarly, Nuno will surely have been given reassurances that he will be able to strengthen the Spurs squad after taking over at White Hart Lane.

As for Newcastle United, as well as not a single Premier League squad signing having been made so far, it doesn’t sound like anything is imminent whatsoever.

Indeed, even the transfer rumours are getting to be real bargain basement stuff with Newcastle. With media reports of Mike Ashley refusing to allow a transfer fee to be paid for £4m rated Mario Lemino at Southampton, as well as claims of NUFC ready to pay £1m for Wolves defender Dion Sanderson who was on loan last season at League One Sunderland.

Considering we are now only four days away from the Newcastle United squad returning for pre-season on Monday (5 July) you have to be concerned, pre-season friendlies for NUFC kicking off in only 17 days time (Sunday 18 July).

With the new Premier League season only six weeks away and total silence at St James Park, Newcastle desperately need more creativity and goals, having lost Joe Willock now and the only reliable goalscorer, Callum Wilson, having become injury prone in recent years, only starting 23 PL games for Newcastle last season.
