Transfer Rumours

Newcastle United interested in £3m ‘bargain’ move for 30 year old centre-back – Report

The latest player now linked with a move to Newcastle United is Kyle Bartley.

The centre-back was regularly mentioned as a supposed Newcastle target in the second half of last season and now his name has been put forward yet again.

The West Brom defender would be seen as a £3m ‘bargain’ buy by Newcastle United according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper saying that Newcastle are competing with Crystal Palace for Kyle Bartley from the relegated club.

Along with most Newcastle fans I was baffled by the notion that Steve Bruce’s main transfer target in this transfer window was a centre-back but certainly by the weight of media reports that appears to be the case. The Magpies had long been said to want Kristoffer Ajer as their first choice signing and the Celtic central defender has stated that he is definitely leaving this summer, however, once Celtic turned down £10m+ offers from other clubs in June, Newcastle were swiftly reported to have dropped out of the race as Mike Ashley won’t be agreeing to that kind of transfer fee in this window.

Newcastle United do now have serious problems when it comes to conceding goals. Under Rafa Benitez‘ guidance and endless work on the training pitch, only six Premier League clubs conceded less goals than Newcastle in both the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, yet last season (2020/21) with the same players, Steve Bruce has now turned the NUFC defence into one that conceded more goals than only four other PL clubs. That is despite the excellent contributions of Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow.

However, what exactly adding Kyle Bartley to the mix would contribute is a mystery. Though just because something sounds daft, doesn’t mean it won’t happen under Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce.

If there is indeed next to no money to spend and Steve Bruce desperately wants to add a different centre-back, could a Kyle Bartley transfer actually happen?

Newcastle United have a rapidly ageing team and nowhere more so than at centre-back, with Ciaran Clark set to turn 32 in September, Federico Fernandez is already 32, Florian Lejeune is 30, Paul Dummett turns 30 in September, Fabian Schar will be 30 in December, whilst youngster Jamaal Lascelles will be 28 in November.

Kyle Bartley is also 30 and was actually part of the absolute worst defence in the Premier League last season, they conceded more than anybody else, a massive 76 goals, 23 more than Fulham, 13 more than Sheffield United, 14 more than Newcastle United…

Looking back at his career, Bartley had only started 14 Premier League games before last season, mainly playing Championship football, so why exactly he would be seen as a sensible signing is anybody’s guess.

As things stand, just newspaper talk at the moment, but if Mike Ashley is refusing to allow any kind of a realistic transfer kitty, how can anybody expect anything better?

This is the 31st day of the transfer window and absolutely nothing from Newcastle United so far, even though the NUFC squad returned to start pre-season training this week and the training camp near York starts on Monday, with teh first friendlies only nine days away.
