Newcastle United won 3-2 at Doncaster Rovers on Friday night in an entertaining open match.

Three weeks only to go until the new season kicks off and the main task of the friendlies to get the team fully fit and ready to hit the ground running.

Last night, there were 13 members of the Newcastle United first team squad who missed the match.

A lot of varying reasons as to why they weren’t available, which meant NUFC had a very youthful bench with the majority of subs from the Under 23s squad.

Newcastle United have now given updates on many of those who were missing, details below.

Only three scheduled friendlies left to go (Rotherham away Tues 27 July, Burton away Fri 30 July and Norwich home Sat 7 Aug) now and very important that as many first team players get as many minutes as possible, along with the new signings…

The 13 Newcastle United squad players who were missing at Doncaster:

Joelinton – Hadn’t fully recovered from thigh injury that forced him off early in the defeat to York on Sunday but the Head Coach now says he should be able to train on Monday.

Javier Manquillo – Steve Bruce says he is hoping the Spaniard will be able to train on Monday.

Matt Ritchie – Steve Bruce tells BBC Newcastle: “Matt Ritchie was a little bit sore after training yesterday [Thursday] so we weren’t going to risk that.”

Yoshinori Muto – Steve Bruce tells BBC Newcastle: “Muto – we’re trying to find a solution (for his future) but he was also a little bit sore.”

Karl Darlow – Currently isolating for ten days after testing positive for Covid, isolation due to be completed early this coming week, unknown whether Rotherham away friendly on Tuesday 27 July will be too soon, leaving then just Burton away on Friday 30 July and Norwich home on Saturday 7 August).

Mark Gillespie – Self isolating as a close contact with Darlow for ten days, isolation due to be completed towards end of the coming week, unknown whether Rotherham away friendly on Tuesday 27 July will be too soon, leaving then just Burton away on Friday 30 July and Norwich home on Saturday 7 August).

Freddie Woodman – Self isolating as a close contact with Darlow for ten days, isolation due to be completed early this coming week, unknown whether Rotherham away friendly on Tuesday 27 July will be too soon, leaving then just Burton away on Friday 30 July and Norwich home on Saturday 7 August).

Jonjo Shelvey – Calf injury and could miss start of season.

Martin Dubravka – After surgery for a broken metatarsal looks sure to miss the start of the 2021/22 season.

Miguel Almiron – Recovering from a hamstring injury and having extended break after international commitments this summer, no update on when he will return.

Fabian Schar – Steve Bruce says that after extended break following international commitments this summer, the Swiss defender will return to training now.

Emil Krafth – Steve Bruce says that after extended break following international commitments this summer, the Swedish defender will return to training now.

Elliot Anderson – Finally confirming the media reports about the young midfielder’s hip problem, Steve Bruce told BBC Newcastle: “He’s got a problem with his hip that’s a concern to us. We gave him time off over the summer but, unfortunately, that hasn’t cleared the situation up. He’s only a kid, so a lot of it is still (to do with) growing.”
