Saturday afternoon has seen Andy Carroll lose his shirt.

The club making an official announcement (see below) on shirt numbers.

For the 2021/22 season, Callum Wilson moves from number 13 to number 9, Joelinton moves from number 9 to number 7 and Andy Carroll moves from number 7 to…

The club have repeatedly refused to confirm whether or not Andy Carroll has actually left the club or not but maybe this is the closest we are going to get to an official clarification of that…

In the official media release, Newcastle United talking about the famous players to have worn the number 9 shirt previously and no mention of Andy Carroll on that either…

On the brighter side, I’m sure Callum Wilson will relish the honour / pressure of wearing the number 9, whilst after six goals in 69 Premier League appearances, difficult to see how moving from 9 to 7 will negatively affect Joelinton.

Newcastle United Official Announcement:

‘Callum Wilson will wear Newcastle United’s famous number 9 shirt for the 2021/22 Premier League season, the club can reveal.

Joelinton, who vacates the number 9 shirt, will switch to number 7, with the full squad numbers set to be finalised and confirmed soon.

The number 9 shirt has been worn by some of the club’s greatest ever goalscorers, with Jackie Milburn, Alan Shearer, Hughie Gallacher, Malcolm Macdonald and many others weaving it into Magpies folklore over the years.

“They’re both iconic shirts and we’re both going to contribute a lot to the team,” Wilson told NUFC TV. “You’re playing for the badge on the front ultimately but you’re wearing a special number on the back and it’s just about doing it justice, playing well and helping the team.”

For supporters who have already purchased personalised Callum Wilson or Joelinton home shirts, simply return the shirt with proof of purchase to the new St. James’ Park club store and Castore will kindly supply a replacement in the same size with the updated squad number.’
