Doncaster boss happy apart from one thing after Newcastle ‘We went toe to toe with them…’
Richie Wellens thinks Doncaster were the better team at times against Newcastle United.
The Doncaster manager saying he was happy with ‘everything’ that he saw.
The only he wasn’t happy with was the ‘result’ as Newcastle won 3-2.
Richie Wellens also believed some of the best individuals on the pitch were playing for the home side as Doncaster went ‘toe to toe’ with Newcastle United and were unlucky to lose according to the Doncaster boss.
An open game saw Newcastle leading 1-0 and 3-1 but eventually it was only Callum Wilson’s first goal wearing the number 9 shirt that separated the two teams.
Richie Wellens thought his side did particularly well, considering that six of his starting eleven had only returned to training the day before the game after self isolating, whilst during the match he also used six trialists.
Richie Wellens talking to Doncaster Free Press after the 3-2 defeat to Newcastle United:
“I’m happy with everything that I saw.
“The only thing I wasn’t happy with was the result because we have a winning mentality.
“We went toe to toe with them and we were open and we played our game.
“We’ve got players who have been self isolating for the last ten days so they need fitness and I wanted to get sprint distances into them, which we certainly got.
“From six or seven minutes to about 25 minutes, we just backed off them a bit but I thought from 25 minutes to half time we were the better side.
“There are so many positives to come from the game.
“If you take into account that we had two trialists starting and six of the starting XI were self-isolating for the last ten days and have done hardly anything.
“I think Ben Close, Matt Smith and Tommy Rowe were three of the best players on the pitch.
“You saw the movement from Jordy Hiwula. Even though he’s lacking fitness, I think you saw a threat there.”
